Apple Music Implements Mandatory Labels for AI-Generated Music
Apple Music has announced that it will transition its AI Transparency Tags from voluntary to mandatory, informing listeners which tracks were created using artificial intelligence. This change will take effect later this year, although the company has not specified a precise date. The new labels aim to bring clarity to the origin of music, particularly regarding tracks that are substantially generated through AI techniques. The announcement was communicated to music industry partners in an email, as reported by Billboard.
Previously introduced in March, the AI Transparency Tags allowed record labels and distributors to indicate when AI was involved in various aspects of music production, including the artwork and composition. However, these tags were initially optional. Now, content providers must label any work that they classify as significantly generated by AI. The company provided a definition for AI-generated content, stating it includes works primarily created with generative AI services.
Apple Music has taken a direct approach to enforce these labels, indicating a desire for transparency to enhance listeners' experience. According to Oliver Schusser, the head of Apple Music, the platform already possesses in-house technology capable of identifying the AI models used in submitted tracks. Despite this capability, the onus will now be on music providers to self-disclose the AI origins of their content.
Schusser noted that currently, over a third of the tracks submitted to Apple Music each month are entirely AI-generated, although this music accounts for less than 0.5% of the platform's total usage. He has previously highlighted the challenges faced by record labels in identifying and managing AI-influenced submissions.
As part of its ongoing strategy to tackle misuse and fraud in music streaming, Apple has previously redistributed royalties from streams deemed to be manipulated and intensified its penalties against streaming fraud.
Apple's decision to enforce AI transparency comes amid a broader trend in the music industry. Other platforms, such as Spotify and TIDAL, have also begun marking AI-generated content, while Deezer has been actively detecting new AI submissions for over a year. These changes underscore a growing need for clarity regarding the contribution of artificial intelligence in music production.
