US Ambassador to India Visits Manipur, Discusses Local Relations

US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, met with Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh during a two-day visit to the region. The meeting took place on September 11, as part of Gor's efforts to strengthen ties between the United States and the northeastern Indian state.

The Chief Minister expressed appreciation for the meeting, stating that discussions focused on enhancing relations between Manipur and the United States. Singh noted his confidence that engagement would grow in the future.

In addition to their discussions, Gor toured local sites including Kangla Fort, which was the historical capital of the Manipur kingdom, and Khwairamband Keithel, an all-women-run market renowned for its vibrant commerce.

During a social media post highlighting his visit, Singh remarked, "It was a pleasure to meet the Ambassador of the United States to India, Sergio Gor, at my Secretariat today." He elaborated on their conversation about the region's beauty and its potential for tourism.

Gor expressed his enthusiasm for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on the development of Northeast India. An official statement noted that Gor was delighted to learn about the number of tourists visiting Manipur, which is known for its diverse culture and natural scenery.

Additionally, Singh invited Gor to attend the upcoming Manipur Sangai Festival, set to take place in late November. The festival showcases the rich culture and heritage of the state's 36 communities, offering a platform for artistic and traditional expressions.

The visit is seen as a meaningful step towards fostering deeper connections between the United States and Manipur, particularly in the contexts of tourism and cultural exchange. Gor was accompanied by the US Consul General in Kolkata, Kathy Giles-Diaz, during his trip to the region.
