Success of 'Hanuman Ansh' Film Surprises Industry

The film 'Hanuman Ansh', which premiered quietly last month, has achieved an extraordinary turnaround in box office performance. Initially grossing Rs 1.08 crore during its first week, it has risen to become the year's most unexpected hit, earning approximately Rs 200 crore in total. Directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, this low-budget biopic centres on the renowned saint Baba Neem Karoli, a figure celebrated by various celebrities including Julia Roberts and Virat Kohli.

Released on August 7, 'Hanuman Ansh' started its journey in 250 cinemas and has expanded to 2,000 screens within a month. The film’s storyline portrays the life of Baba Neem Karoli, known for his miraculous ability and deep-rooted spirituality. Born in the early 20th century, Baba Neem Karoli, formerly named Lakshman Narayan Sharma, dedicated his life to spirituality after a brief period of marriage, eventually becoming a wandering hermit. His ashram in Kainchi Dham has been a pilgrimage site for many.

Following a modest opening, the film experienced a remarkable resurgence in box office sales, particularly in its third week, prompting industry analysts to explore the factors behind this success. Kamal Gianchandani, Chief Business Planning and Strategy Officer at PVR INOX Limited, stated, "No one saw this coming. 'Hanuman Ansh' turned into a blockbuster almost unexpectedly."

Industry professionals have noted a consistent appeal in faith-based cinema in India, dating back to earlier films such as 'Jai Santoshi Maa' from 1975. Spiritual and mythological themes have resonated with audiences across generations, significantly contributing to box office returns, as highlighted by film historian S M M Ausaja.

Upcoming projects, including an ambitious adaptation of the 'Ramayana' led by director Nitesh Tiwari and starring Ranbir Kapoor, are generating anticipation. Ausaja remarked that contemporary audiences, encouraged by recent trends in theatrical releases, are gravitating towards faith-based films like 'Hanuman Ansh', citing increased attendance since the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

Cinepolis India Managing Director Devang Sampat elaborated on the film's popularity, attributing success to the audience's trust rather than any star power or marketing. The word-of-mouth endorsement from viewers played a pivotal role in driving attendance. Sampat pointed out that recent successful films such as 'Kantara' and 'Laalo' also tap into cultural values, indicating a preference for narratives that resonate on a deeper level.

In an industry frequently driven by repeatable formulas, Sampat cautioned that reliance on templates may lead to audience disillusionment, underscoring the importance of authenticity in storytelling.
