Ukraine Claims Russia Aids Iran with Satellite Surveillance Against US

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of facilitating Iranian strikes against US military bases in the Middle East through satellite surveillance. In response to these allegations, US President Donald Trump stated that he would personally ask Russian President Vladimir Putin about the claims. "I'll ask Putin about it. We'll find out," Trump informed reporters aboard Air Force One, while asserting that any such support had not significantly impacted US operations as they had previously dealt severe blows to Iran's capabilities.

Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine had acquired evidence indicating that Russia had been conducting satellite surveillance over Gulf states and American military installations. In a post on X, he stated, "Since the beginning of July, we have recorded active Russian satellite surveillance of the Gulf states and US military facilities located there." He further emphasised that the satellite imagery was subsequently passed to Iran, noting a correlation between the surveillance activities and Iranian strikes both prior to and after the attacks.

He specified instances, pointing out that on July 19 and 20, Russian satellites monitored four military air bases—two in Bahrain, one in Jordan, and another in Kuwait—which were later included in Iran's operational strategies. Zelenskyy remarked, "The purpose is clear. None of us in the world should turn a blind eye to one very simple fact: evil always seeks ways to make things worse and spread further. Russia must be stopped. This war must be stopped. Pressure on the aggressor must work."

Despite Zelenskyy's serious implications, Trump hinted that the primary focus of the US remains on diplomacy with Iran. He indicated that Iran recently requested renewed negotiations after ongoing US strikes. "They asked us very nicely, 'Please stop, let's meet,'" Trump noted, adding that the current situation reflects an opportunity for dialogue.

The US President contended that the recent military operations have significantly weakened Iran’s military strength, leading him to downplay the potential impact of any intelligence support that Russia might provide.

The claims made by Zelenskyy are not isolated; they form part of a broader narrative suggesting that Russia has been covertly assisting Iran during the ongoing conflict. CBS News reported that Russia has been sharing information regarding US military positions in the Middle East with Iran. Furthermore, various US media outlets have posited that China might also be indirectly involved, although concrete evidence supporting this assertion remains absent.

This topic was also brought up during a congressional hearing where US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, in response to inquiries about whether Russia and China were aiding Iran, acknowledged, "There's definitely adversary alignment, attempts to do so, and there are many ways that we deter that. The depth and extent of it ought to remain classified, and it should." He confirmed that both nations have been facilitating certain activities undertaken by Iran.

Trump's latest comments reflect a shift in his previous stance; just days earlier, he expressed confidence that neither Russia nor China was actively aiding Iran. Writing on Truth Social, he had asserted that both leaders, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, assured him of their lack of involvement. "Therefore, two major countries that people speak of often in terms of Iran are, in my opinion, not participating," he stated.

As a new development in the discourse, Trump now plans to directly seek clarification from Putin following Zelenskyy’s claims. The ongoing conflict with Iran has resulted in significant ramifications for US military personnel stationed in the region. Reports indicate that 18 US service members have lost their lives since the outbreak of hostilities, with over 624 others sustaining injuries. Recently, three US soldiers were among the fatalities resulting from an Iranian strike at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, with another soldier dying during an operation involving the disposal of an Iranian drone in Iraq.
