UAE Halts Trade with Iran Amid Rising Tensions and Missile Alerts
The UAE has suspended all trade and financial dealings with Iran following missile threats and increased regional tensions.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced the suspension of all trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran, citing rising regional tensions. This significant decision follows a missile threat that led to emergency alerts across the country on Tuesday.

The alert, which was sent to residents in various cities including Dubai, warned citizens to seek shelter after authorities detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran. The UAE's Ministry of Defence confirmed that one missile fell outside the country's territorial waters, while the other landed within them. Both missiles were reportedly targeting maritime traffic, and no casualties were reported.

In the aftermath of the missile incident, UAE officials expressed their determination to protect the nation’s security and sovereignty. The Emirati forces have maintained a high state of alert in response to potential threats.

Iran has categorically denied these allegations, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei labelling them as baseless and detrimental to regional trust-building efforts. He urged nations in the region to avoid making unsubstantiated claims during a period of heightened tensions.

This escalation follows a history of disputes involving UAE-linked ships in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, where several vessels managed by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company have experienced incidents, although Iran has not claimed responsibility for these attacks.

The UAE’s move to halt all trade comes after a period of tentative calm between the two countries, which had previously participated in dialogues aimed at reducing tensions. The economic suspension underscores a marked deterioration in their relations, contrasting sharply with efforts discussed in a June memorandum to negotiate a peace agreement. The timeframe for these negotiations ended without a resolution on August 17.

As the conflict between the United States and Iran remains unresolved, U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that no talks are currently being planned with Iran. Meanwhile, Iran has asserted that it will keep the Strait of Hormuz closed until its conditions for resolving the conflict are met.

The Strait of Hormuz is vital for global oil transportation, and any disruption poses a considerable risk to international energy markets, as it previously accounted for one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. The ongoing situation continues to impact regional and global stability as diplomatic channels remain stalled.
