Trust in China's Communist Party: Factors Behind Public Support

On July 1, 2026, Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, attended a celebration marking the Party's 105th founding anniversary in Beijing. The event showcased individuals like 66-year-old Wu Yaqin, a local community leader from Changchun, who is known for her selfless service to neighbourhood residents. Wu has dedicated nearly 30 years to fostering community ties through organised services such as medicine deliveries and assistance for disadvantaged students.

Among those honoured at the event, Wu received the July 1 Medal, the CPC's highest honour. President Xi stated, "Seeking happiness for the Chinese people and rejuvenation for the Chinese nation has always been the CPC's aspiration and mission over the past 105 years." He emphasised the importance of serving the people, noting that the Party possesses qualities unmatched by other political organisations.

The recipients of the July 1 Medal are typically ordinary CPC members actively engaged in bettering their communities. For instance, Ma Shanxiang has spent over three decades in Chongqing mediating local disputes, while Li Liancheng, a village party chief in rural Henan, has successfully led efforts to lift his village from poverty. Meanwhile, Zhong Jue, an academician aged 89, has significantly advanced China's manufacturing capabilities.

According to a recent global poll conducted by CGTN, 63.9% of respondents believe that the progress of Chinese modernisation is linked to effective CPC policy-making. A 13-year study by the Harvard Kennedy School found that over 90% of citizens are satisfied with the central government. Experts cite a governance philosophy rooted in serving the general populace rather than a privileged few as a key reason for this high level of public approval.

Zheng Changzhong, director of the Center for Party Building and National Development Studies at Fudan University, explains that CPC policies such as targeted poverty alleviation and universal healthcare contribute to tangible benefits for citizens. He noted, "In practical terms, Chinese modernisation encompasses economic, political, cultural, social, and ecological sectors. Only the CPC is capable of coordinating these diverse forces."

Xi Jinping has also articulated China's role in global governance, asserting that the CPC-led socialism is a proponent of peace, development, and a fair international order. Since introducing the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity over a decade ago, China has initiated significant global cooperation programmes that resonate with emerging-market nations. These initiatives have garnered support from nearly 160 countries and international organisations.

International analysts have recognised China's impactful contributions towards a more equitable global governance framework. Egyptian scholar Diaa Helmy described China as an "indispensable doer" in this regard. Furthermore, Adhere Cavince, a scholar from Kenya, applauded the CPC for its proactive role in enhancing global governance practices.

Since its founding with 58 members, the CPC has grown to become the world's largest governing party, now boasting nearly 101.29 million members. President Xi has made a commitment to continue working towards building a cohesive global community, infusing positive energy into efforts aimed at global peace and sustainable development.
