Trump Meets New York’s Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Donald Trump stated on Monday that he hopes Zohran Mamdani will prove to be a successful mayor for New York City. This sentiment stands in contrast to the Republican Party’s portrayal of Mamdani as emblematic of the Democratic Party’s supposed leanings towards socialism, a narrative Trump has harnessed for his midterm campaign. Following a closed-door meeting at Gracie Mansion, both leaders appeared amicable. Mamdani described their discussions as 'wide-ranging,' covering subjects like affordable housing and immigration, though he did not provide specific details on any differences they may have. When asked if he questioned Trump regarding the exclusion of certain media outlets from White House events, Mamdani said, 'I told the president that we’re going to have all of the members of the press here on the lawn, and that is something that I believe in.' Trump responded by noting, 'It’s interesting because they said they were going to boycott me, but they never boycott me, so I wasn’t very worried about that.' This visit, taking place a day before Trump’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly, marked the first presidential visit to Gracie Mansion in 45 years, the last being Ronald Reagan in 1981. Mamdani explained his invitation of Trump by stating his willingness to collaborate with anyone who could benefit New Yorkers, emphasising their mutual interest in developing new housing units at Sunnyside Yard in Queens. Trump expressed optimism about Mamdani’s potential, claiming, 'I certainly hope he will be a great mayor. You have to understand – I want what’s good for New York. I want what’s good for the country.' The tone of the meeting appeared friendly, with Trump showing deference while Mamdani spoke, even tapping him affectionately on the arm when the conference concluded. Present at the meeting were Trump’s Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Mamdani’s Chief of Staff Elle Bisgaard-Church. Mamdani also expressed strong views regarding immigrant protections, particularly for Haitian Americans. 'I shared my very strong opinions about how we can keep New Yorkers safe, how we can keep immigrant New Yorkers safe, and how important immigrant New Yorkers, especially Haitian New Yorkers, are – not only to the fabric of our city, but also to our city’s economy,' he stated. He acknowledged that while there were many disagreements between them, they were candid about their differing perspectives. The meeting came shortly after Mamdani, alongside Clara Brugada, Mayor of Mexico City, had an engagement with migrant delivery workers in New York, addressing their concerns regarding the rising number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests. Earlier in the month, Mamdani initiated a lawsuit against the Trump administration concerning changes to the “public charge” rule affecting immigrant communities. It remains unclear if this lawsuit was discussed during their recent meeting.
