Trump Launches 'Project Freedom' Amid Iran-Israel War Developments
U.S. President Donald Trump announces a new initiative to aid ships in the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions persist in the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new initiative titled 'Project Freedom' aimed at assisting ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing tensions in the region. The project is set to begin on Monday, May 4, 2026, and intends to help facilitate the movement of numerous vessels affected by the conflict, which has intensified since the outbreak of war between Iran and Israel.

In a statement made on social media, President Trump highlighted that ships from 'neutral and innocent' countries have been adversely affected by the war with Iran. He noted that U.S. forces would guide these vessels safely through the challenging waters of the Strait to ensure they can continue their operations without disruption.

Trump's announcement comes as tensions between Iran and the United States remain high. The Iranian government has stated that it is reviewing a response from the U.S. concerning a previously submitted 14-point proposal for ending the conflict. However, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson indicated that, at this time, there are no ongoing negotiations regarding nuclear issues.

Incidents of maritime insecurity have increased in recent days, with reports indicating multiple attacks against vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. A recent attack on a bulk carrier was confirmed by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre, which reiterated warnings for vessels to exercise caution in the waters.

A senior Iranian official warned that any U.S. interference in the Strait of Hormuz would constitute a breach of the current ceasefire agreement. Ebrahim Azizi, head of the national security commission of Iran's parliament, posted his warning on social media, underscoring the fragility of the region's security situation.

Amid rising oil prices caused by the conflict, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent predicted that energy prices would decrease later this year. He discussed the situation during an appearance on Fox Business Network and suggested that as the conflict continues to evolve, oil prices would experience significant changes.

Oil production targets are also under adjustment, with several member countries of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, known as OPEC+, announcing increases in their quotas. The total planned increase is reported to be 188,000 barrels per day. Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has reiterated calls for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and abandon its nuclear weapons programme, affirming that diplomatic solutions are sought to address the crisis.

The developments in the region are closely monitored, as the potential for escalation remains high amidst the ongoing military actions and the international responses to both Iran and the Israel conflict.
