Trump Excludes South Africa from 2026 G20 Summit in Miami
US President Donald Trump announces South Africa will not be invited to the G20 Summit in 2026, citing human rights concerns.

In a recent announcement, United States President Donald Trump declared that South Africa will not receive an invitation to the G20 Summit scheduled to take place in Miami, Florida, in 2026. This decision follows Trump's criticism of South Africa's commitment to human rights and its treatment of certain demographics within the country.

The G20, an international forum of major economies, will be under the US Presidency from December 1, 2025, through November 30, 2026, succeeding South Africa, which held the presidency in 2025. Trump expressed his sentiments regarding South Africa's membership, stating that the country is 'not worthy' of participation in the G20 or any other global grouping.

In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump outlined his rationale. He accused the South African government of neglecting the rights of Afrikaners and other descendants of European settlers, claiming that the country is responsible for serious human rights abuses. He stated, 'The United States did not attend the G20 in South Africa because the South African Government refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific human rights abuses endured by Afrikaners.' Trump further asserted that South Africa has 'demonstrated' its unworthiness for membership in international forums and announced an immediate halt to all US financial support to the nation.

The decision comes after South Africa's handling of the recent G20 summit, which took place in Johannesburg in November 2025. During this event, South Africa faced criticism for allegedly not transferring the G20 presidency duties to a senior US representative, which Trump cited as a key factor in his decision to exclude the country from future participation.

In response, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa described Trump's comments as regrettable. The South African Presidency issued a statement highlighting the successful organisation of the Johannesburg summit, attended by numerous global leaders, and reaffirmed the country's commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation.

It is important to note that South Africa has been a member of the G20 since its inception and has consistently valued the principles of consensus and collaboration. The South African government expressed its disappointment over being subjected to derogatory remarks regarding its international standing and insisted that it will continue to engage actively as a member of the G20.

The South African government also pointed out that the United States had opted not to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg, stating, 'The United States was expected to participate in all the meetings of the G20 during South Africa's Presidency, but unfortunately, it elected not to attend the G20 Leaders Summit in Johannesburg of its own volition.'

South Africa's commitment to respecting the sovereignty of all nations was reiterated in their response, emphasising that the country does not condone insults directed at its international role or standing. The South African government has called upon other G20 members to continue operating in a spirit of equality and cooperation.

The diplomatic relationship between South Africa and the United States has been strained in recent years, with Trump previously condemning South Africa for what he described as a 'shocking disregard' for its citizens' rights. As the 2026 summit approaches, it remains to be seen how these tensions will impact broader international relations within the G20 framework and beyond.
