Trump signals second phase of sanctions against Russia
US Treasury Secretary urges sanctions on oil buyers to pressure Russia for peace, while Trump's warning to Hamas escalates Middle East tensions.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has advocated for intensified sanctions against Russia, indicating that stringent financial measures are crucial to prompt President Vladimir Putin to engage in peace discussions with Ukraine. This announcement came during an appearance on "Meet the Press" on Sunday, where Bessent highlighted the need for cooperative pressure from both the United States and European Union.

A Call for Further Sanctions
Bessent referred to countries like India and China as "bad actors" for their continued procurement of Russian oil. He argued that secondary tariffs on these nations could significantly destabilise the Russian economy. "If the US and the European Union can come in, do more sanctions, secondary tariffs on the countries that buy Russian oil, the Russian economy will be in full collapse, and that will bring President Putin to the table," he asserted, as reported by Reuters.

Previous Measures and Reactions
While the US has already implemented steep tariffs—up to 50% on India and as high as 145% on China—the response from these nations has led them to call out perceived hypocrisy. India, for instance, has pointed out that several European nations also import substantial amounts of Russian energy without facing similar punitive measures.

Bessent underscored the urgency of concerted efforts to apply pressure: "We need our European partners to follow us because if the US and the EU do this together, we are in a race now between how long can the Ukrainian military hold up versus how long can the Russian economy hold up?" This sentiment reflects Trump’s frustrations over his administration's failure to mediate a resolution to the ongoing conflict.

Elevating Tensions in the Middle East
Simultaneously, President Donald Trump has issued a stark advisory to Hamas, branding it a "last warning" concerning a deal aimed at resolving the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. Speaking on social media, Trump remarked, "Everyone wants the hostages HOME. Everyone wants this War to end! The Israelis have accepted my Terms. It is time for Hamas to accept as well." This statement follows recent discussions where Trump disclosed that the White House is deeply involved in negotiations regarding the hostages.

This new phase of sanctions and diplomatic engagements appears to be part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to navigate the complexities of global conflicts.

President Trump's Engagement at the US Open
On a different front, President Trump attended the US Open men’s final, departing shortly after Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz secured victory. Despite mixed reactions from the crowd, Trump's presence at the event included discussions with his aides, including Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. He later faced vocal disapproval from some attendees, a stark reminder of his polarising political standing.

Closing Thoughts
As Bessent's remarks and Trump’s declarations underline an aggressive stance towards both foreign adversaries and complicated diplomatic matters, analysts are keenly observing how these tactics will play out in the geopolitical arena. The synchronicity of escalating sanctions on Russia while simultaneously attempting to broker peace in the Middle East reveals the multifaceted challenges faced by the current administration.

With escalating rhetoric and actions, both in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, the international community remains alert to the potential ramifications of these developments.
