Trump Claims Iran is Losing Amid Ongoing Peace Talks in Islamabad
US President Donald Trump has reiterated his stance that Iran is 'losing big' amid ongoing peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan. The discussions, which are the highest-level negotiations between the two nations since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, involve key officials from both governments. Trump made his comments on the social media platform Truth Social while the negotiations unfolded.
In his post, Trump claimed that the media is misrepresenting the situation by suggesting Iran has the upper hand in the conflict. He referred to this narrative as 'Fake News Media,' a term he frequently uses to dismiss unfavourable coverage. 'Everyone knows that they are LOSING, and LOSING BIG!' Trump asserted, adding that Iran's military capabilities have diminished significantly.
He detailed that Iran's naval and air forces are effectively non-existent, stating, 'Their Navy is gone, their Air Force is gone, their Anti-Aircraft apparatus is nonexistent.' This declaration came as US naval movements occurred near the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route that Iran has attempted to control for geopolitical leverage.
The timing of Trump's remarks coincides with reports suggesting that the US is initiating operations to 'clear' the Strait of Hormuz, described as a favour to multiple nations including China, Japan, and several European countries. This was followed by a US warship moving from Fujairah Port in the United Arab Emirates towards the strategic waterway. Iran reportedly warned Pakistani mediators that if the warship continued its course, it would face targeting within a 30-minute timeframe. Shortly after, the US vessel turned back.
The ceasefire talks, mediated by Pakistan, have been described as crucial for de-escalating tensions between the US and Iran. Vice President JD Vance, serving as a key representative of the US administration, is at the forefront of these discussions, alongside other senior officials. The Iranian delegation, which includes high-ranking lawmakers and ministers, has expressed the importance of these negotiations for regional stability.
Trump's online tirade further included claims about Iran's missile and drone manufacturing capabilities, which he stated have been significantly damaged. He also highlighted the flow of oil from the US, suggesting that many ships were heading to the United States to acquire what he described as the 'best and sweetest oil' in the world, asserting that the US has a larger oil supply than its next two largest competitors combined.
The backdrop of these remarks is a volatile global oil market, closely tied to the ongoing US-Iran conflict. The president's statements have reignited debates surrounding the geopolitical implications of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's influence over oil trade routes. Meanwhile, the international community continues to monitor the peace talks in Islamabad, hopeful that they may lead to a resolution of longstanding tensions between the two nations.
