President Donald Trump terminates Pam Bondi as US attorney general amid criticism over handling of Epstein files and investigations into political opponents.

Pam Bondi has been removed from her position as the United States attorney general in the Trump administration. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that Bondi would be "transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector." Todd Blanche will now serve as the acting attorney general, according to Trump's statement.

Bondi's tenure was marked by significant scrutiny, particularly regarding her management of the files related to Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Critics have accused her and the Justice Department of failing to adequately redact the names of victims. Under Bondi's leadership, the department pursued various criminal investigations into several of Trump's political adversaries, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey.

Although the announcement of Bondi's dismissal appears sudden, some analysts suggest it was anticipated. White House reporter Bernd Debusmann Jr noted that while Trump maintained his Cabinet largely intact during the first year of his second term, he has initiated significant changes in recent weeks. This includes the recent removal of Kristi Noem from her role as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Reports indicate that the president's growing frustration over Bondi's handling of the Epstein files contributed to her dismissal. Congressional hearings examining the government's disclosures of these files featured heated exchanges involving Bondi, with accusations coming from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers who felt she had not aggressively pursued investigations into the president's political rivals.

In a recent statement on the social media platform X, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie expressed support for Bondi's firing. He wrote, "I support Trump firing Pam Bondi. Do you?" He encouraged his followers to participate in a poll on the topic, advocating for the next attorney general to fully comply with legal requirements concerning the Epstein files and pursue necessary investigations.

During her time as attorney general, Bondi was known for contentious moments during her testimonies before Congress. In particular, a notable incident involved her defending the performance of the stock market when questioned about Epstein’s allegations. She stated, "The Dow is over 50,000 right now," seemingly deflecting serious concerns raised during the hearings.

Celebrities of the Republican party have begun to respond to Bondi's exit. West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito expressed gratitude towards Bondi for her service, highlighting her efforts to tackle issues such as drug abuse in communities. Florida Senator Rick Scott praised Bondi as a great friend and a skilled lawyer, emphasizing her accomplishments as Florida's first female attorney general.

Pam Bondi, aged 60 and originally from Tampa, Florida, earned her criminal justice degree from the University of Florida before receiving a professional degree from Stetson University College of Law. She entered the Florida Bar in 1991 and served for over 18 years as a prosecutor prior to her political career.

Elected as Florida's first female attorney general in 2010, Bondi focused on combating opioid abuse and human trafficking. In addition to her previous roles, she was involved with the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank, and participated in Trump’s legal team during his first impeachment trial, as well as during claims regarding the 2020 election.

Bondi's approach to the Epstein files, in particular, has drawn substantial ire, with lawmakers from both parties accusing her of failing to adequately protect the identities of victims while disregarding the urgency of releasing relevant information to the public. Survivors have noted that she has yet to meet with them or respond to inquiries concerning Epstein's actions.

As the Trump administration adjusts its personnel, the implications of Bondi's firing remain to be seen, with investigations into the Epstein files and political opponents continuing to play a critical role in the administration's agenda.
