US President Donald Trump urges Chinese President Xi Jinping to consider releasing pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai following his recent conviction.

United States President Donald Trump has appealed to Chinese President Xi Jinping to consider the release of Jimmy Lai, a prominent pro-democracy figure in Hong Kong, following his conviction under the city's national security law. Trump expressed concern for the health of the 78-year-old media tycoon, who has been imprisoned since December 2020.

In a statement to reporters, Trump said, "I feel so badly. I spoke to President Xi about it and I asked to consider his release." While he did not specify when he discussed Lai's situation with Xi, his remarks reflect growing international concern over the treatment of political dissidents in Hong Kong.

Lai was found guilty on multiple charges related to collusion with foreign forces, a verdict that rights advocates have condemned as a significant blow to freedom of the press in the region. The Hong Kong High Court's ruling has drawn widespread criticism, with many viewing it as politically motivated persecution.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has also called for Lai's immediate release, condemning the ruling as a violation of human rights. In Parliament, she stated that Lai had been targeted for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression. The UK government has summoned the Chinese Ambassador to express its strong disapproval of the court's decision.

Lai's conviction comes amid heightened scrutiny of Hong Kong's legal system, which critics argue is being used to stifle dissent. The national security law, implemented in 2020, has faced backlash for its broad definitions and the potential for misuse against activists and journalists.

As a British citizen, Lai's case has garnered significant attention in the UK. His children have raised alarms about their father's deteriorating health while incarcerated. His son, Sebastien Lai, has urged the UK government to take a firmer stance against China. He stated, "It’s time to put action behind words and make my father’s release a precondition to closer relationships with China."

Lai's daughter, Claire, expressed that her father wishes to reunite with his family and abandon political activism if released. "He just wants to dedicate the rest of his days to his family," she said.

The closure of Lai's former newspaper, Apple Daily, in 2021 marked a significant shift in Hong Kong's media landscape, with many outlets scaling back critical reporting on the Chinese government due to fears of repercussions. The region's press freedom ranking has severely declined, dropping to 140th out of 180 countries, according to the advocacy group Reporters Without Borders.

In response to the verdict, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the conviction exemplified China’s commitment to suppressing dissent. He urged for Lai's release on humanitarian grounds, highlighting reports of his declining health during his nearly three years in prison.

As international pressure mounts, the fate of Jimmy Lai remains uncertain, with calls for his release continuing from various global leaders and human rights organisations. The situation reflects broader concerns about the erosion of freedoms in Hong Kong since the implementation of the national security law, which many argue has fundamentally altered the territory's political landscape.
