TRAI's New Tariff Vouchers: A Step Towards Consumer-Centric Policies

On 27 September 2023, Raghav Chadha, a Member of Parliament for the Bharatiya Janata Party, applauded the Indian government's latest decision to direct telecom operators to introduce special tariff vouchers (STVs) for voice calls and SMS at reduced prices. This announcement follows discussions that Chadha raised in Parliament during the Budget session earlier this year.

In a video message, Chadha characterised the initiative as a model of constructive politics. The government’s action, he noted, aligns with his earlier requests for more flexible and consumer-friendly mobile plans. "I hope we continue to solve the real problems of real India together like this," he stated.

The new regulations, announced by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on 22 September 2023, stipulate that telecom companies must provide these STVs for voice calls and SMS, similar to existing bundles that include data services. The intention is to cater to users who primarily rely on voice communication rather than data.

Chadha highlighted a significant concern for prepaid mobile users during his address on 11 March 2023. He observed that many such users are faced with recharge cycles that do not accurately reflect the typical month. He remarked, "While there are twelve months in a year, one has to recharge thirteen times due to plans that follow a 28-day cycle. Why should there not be options for 30-day validity?"

Additionally, Chadha pointed out that a substantial number of consumers do not utilise data services and should have access to plans specifically for voice calls. The government's decision to implement these measures has been welcomed by the MP as a step towards addressing these longstanding concerns.
