Tragic Truck Accident Claims 15 Lives Near Gwalior Temple
A truck strike near a temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, results in 15 deaths and 28 injuries during Navratri celebrations.

Fifteen people, including several teenagers, have lost their lives, and 28 others sustained injuries after a truck crashed into devotees outside the Sheetla Mata temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The accident occurred around 1.30 am on Sunday on Chinor Road during the ongoing Sharadiya Navratri celebrations.

The vehicle, which had a registration number from Punjab, descended a slope, veering out of control and striking devotees who were attending prayers. It also collided with makeshift roadside shops before crashing into the temple's entrance gate, causing part of the wall to collapse, according to local authorities.

Gwalior range's acting Inspector General of Police, Asit Yadav, confirmed that 15 individuals died, while earlier estimates suggested up to 40 injured. Among the injured are two police officers who were on duty at the temple at the time of the incident. Authorities indicated that the truck was in a no-entry zone, raising questions about security protocols in place.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has called for an investigation into the accident and announced compensation for the victims' families. Those who died will receive Rs 4 lakh, while individuals with minor injuries will be assisted with Rs 50,000 each.

Preliminary reports from law enforcement suggest the truck's brakes may have failed, propelling the driver into an evasive manoeuvre. Investigators noted that a direct path could have resulted in significantly more casualties, as it could have endangered hundreds of devotees.

Following the accident, both the driver and truck owner have been arrested. Police are actively searching for the driver, who fled the scene. The local administration has faced scrutiny, prompting the suspension of eight police personnel, including the City Superintendent of Police, for alleged negligence.

A statement from Chief Minister Yadav in Indore expressed the need for immediate action to ensure the safety of citizens. He underscored the importance of reviewing security arrangements to prevent future incidents, stating, "No negligence will be tolerated at any level in public safety."

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with several devotees trapped under debris following the wall's collapse. Relatives of victims expressed frustration and grief at the lack of security measures allowing heavy vehicles to enter the area.

Medical personnel at Gajendra Medical College reported that while several patients remained in critical condition, others have been stabilised.

The community has rallied together in the aftermath of the disaster, with many questioning how such a heavy vehicle could navigate a space dense with worshippers. One eyewitness suggested that security arrangements were clearly inadequate for the sizable crowd gathered for the festivities.

Numerous families are still searching for their loved ones amidst the chaos, reflecting the deep emotional impact of this tragic event. Local authorities continue to provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
