Emergency Landing in Bulgaria Following Bomb Threat on Flight
An Austrian Airlines flight, designated OS82, was compelled to make an emergency landing in Sofia, Bulgaria, after the crew received a bomb threat. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, was en route from Tel Aviv to Vienna and was flying near the Romanian border when the situation escalated. The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday.
Following the receipt of the threat, the flight crew opted to divert to Sofia, where they landed safely at Vasil Levski Airport shortly after 9:40 PM local time (18:40 GMT). Bulgarian air force responded promptly, dispatching a MiG-29 fighter jet to escort the aircraft to the airport. Initial reports indicate that there were a total of six crew members and 51 passengers aboard the flight.
Once on the ground, all individuals disembarked without injury. Subsequently, a thorough security search of the aircraft was conducted. An official statement from Austrian Airlines indicated that arrangements for the rebooking of passengers onto alternative flights would be made promptly following the completion of the search.
In response to this incident, a crisis response team has been established, and an investigation into the threat has commenced, according to Bulgarian authorities. Flight tracking data from FlightAware shows that OS82 departed from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv at 6:46 PM local time (15:46 GMT) and integrated Romanian airspace at 9:10 PM (18:10 GMT) before turning back towards Bulgaria. It was noted that the aircraft was transmitting a distress signal, specifically squawk code 7700, at that time.
This incident comes shortly after a similar high-profile aviation event. Last month, a Flydubai flight carrying 174 passengers faced a critical situation when a co-pilot allegedly attempted a violent act against the pilot mid-flight. That plane was forced to make an emergency landing after a rapid descent, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding air travel safety. Following that incident, the Israeli government has implemented measures to scrutinise the identities of all pilots flying into the country.
As investigations continue into the bomb threat on Austrian Airlines flight OS82, the Bulgarian authorities emphasise their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all flights entering their airspace.
