Tragic IAF Plane Crash Claims Lives of Two Young Soldiers in Assam
Families mourn the loss of two Indian Air Force soldiers after an AN-32 aircraft crash in Assam, as investigations begin into the accident.

Families and communities in India are grappling with the aftermath of a tragic accident involving an Indian Air Force (IAF) AN-32 cargo aircraft, which crashed on Saturday during landing at the Air Force Station in Jorhat, Assam. The incident resulted in the deaths of five personnel, including two young soldiers from Bihar, whose families have shared their grief in the wake of the tragedy.

Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar, aged 25, and Agniveervayu Danish Alam, aged 22, were among those who lost their lives. The cause of the accident remains unknown, and officials have stated that an investigation is underway.

Kumar, hailing from Banwariya village in Jehanabad district, Bihar, had spoken to his family via video call shortly before the accident. His family described him as cheerful during the call, indicating he was busy but would talk more later. Tragically, they would soon receive devastating news about the crash. His younger brother, Satyam, recounted how they initially struggled to accept the loss until unanswered calls confirmed the worst fears.

The local community remembers Kumar fondly as a humble and connected individual, engaged with his village even while serving in the military. He had recently returned home to participate in his grandmother's last rites and had only resumed duty ten days prior to the incident. His marriage had been scheduled for November.

In Kayamnagar village, Danish Alam’s family is also mourning. His mother, Akhtari Begum, recalls a last photograph of him sent from an aircraft just hours before the crash, showing him happy. Tragically, Begum fainted upon hearing of his death. Alam was the only son in a family with two daughters, and his loss leaves his family devastated. His father, Mohammad Farooq Alam, faces an uncertain future as the family's sole breadwinner.

Sujit Tiwari, a close friend of Alam, emphasised the family’s dependence on him, urging for governmental assistance, saying, "Alam was the family's biggest support," highlighting their limited financial resources and the struggles that now lie ahead.

As news of the crash spread, communities in both villages came together to pay homage to the young soldiers, with many expressing both sorrow for their loss and pride in their service. Both soldiers were given full military honours during their funerals, which were attended by thousands. In Kumar's village, a significant crowd gathered to pay their respects, while in Alam's village, local residents rallied in support, chanting slogans in memory of the fallen soldiers.

The IAF has expressed its condolences and committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the aircraft's crash. As investigations proceed, the nation mourns the loss of these young individuals who dedicated their lives to serving their country.
