Three Killed in Alberta Traffic Collision Involving Correctional Officers

Three individuals tragically lost their lives in a traffic accident on Thursday in rural Alberta. Among the deceased was 25-year-old Ramandeep Kaur Maan, a correctional officer of Indian descent from Punjab, who was employed by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC).

The incident occurred shortly before noon at the intersection of Highway 41 and Highway 13, south of Wainwright, approximately 200 km southeast of Edmonton. A correctional vehicle, transporting an inmate, collided head-on with a Hino box truck.

The other victims included Nicolae Serban, a 57-year-old correctional officer from Sherwood Park, and Kiara Mooswa, a 24-year-old inmate. All three occupants of the correctional vehicle died at the scene. The truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, but their identity has not yet been disclosed.

In a statement, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) noted that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing, but further details regarding the vehicle's destination have not been revealed.

Ramandeep Kaur Maan, originally from Gudhe village in Ludhiana district, moved to Canada as an international student and settled in Edmonton after completing her studies in Manitoba. Known for her passion for sports, she had joined the CSC approximately six months prior to the accident.

The incident has sparked an outpouring of grief among Maan’s community in Canada and in her home village. Prime Minister Mark Carney extended his condolences, stating, "Every day, correctional officers do difficult work with an enormous responsibility: keeping Canadians and our communities safe. Yesterday, two officers tragically lost their lives."

Talal Dakalbab, the Commissioner of CSC, expressed profound sadness over the loss. He stated, "Nick and Ramandeep embodied that commitment every day. Their service, sacrifice, and dedication to others will not be forgotten."

The death of inmate Kiara Mooswa during the incident adds another dimension to the tragedy. As such, CSC has announced an internal investigation in line with its policy for similar incidents involving inmates.

The Union of Canadian Correctional Officers also offered their condolences, emphasising the risks faced by correctional officers and the impact their sacrifice has on the community. The statement read, "Today, our union mourns two dedicated professionals who served with courage, commitment, and honour. Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten."
