Three Dead and Seven Homes Destroyed in Militant Assault in Manipur

Three individuals lost their lives and seven residences were set ablaze in a suspected militant assault on Loibol Khullen village, located in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur. This incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, as reported by the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), which represents the Kuki-Zo tribes in the area. KIM alleged that members of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) and its affiliated group, Zeliangrong United Front (K), launched the attack around 4 am.

The victims were identified as Letkhongam Haokip, aged 34, his wife Tinmary Haokip, aged 30, and a family friend, Jangminlal Haokip, also 34. The assault not only claimed lives but also inflicted severe damage on civilian property and caused distress within the local community.

KIM condemned the incident, characterising it as a "barbaric act of violence" directed towards unarmed civilians. The organisation described the targeted killing of innocent individuals and the destruction of homes as serious infringements on human rights and dignity. They expressed condolences to the families affected and voiced solidarity with those impacted by the assault, which they indicated had caused "immeasurable grief" to the Kuki-Zo community.

In their statement, KIM called for an immediate investigation by the Government of India and security forces into the murderous actions, appealing for apprehension of those culpable and urgent justice. They also urged for enhanced security measures in vulnerable villages to prevent further civilian attacks. KIM stated, "The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be held fully accountable," and indicated they would not assume responsibility for any consequences following the attack.

This violent encounter is set against the backdrop of prolonged ethnic strife in Manipur, particularly since May 2023. Tensions erupted following protests related to the Meitei community's demands for Scheduled Tribe status, leading to widespread clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. Official and media reports estimate that over 250 individuals have been killed, with around 60,000 displaced due to the ongoing unrest.

As of now, a significant number of residents remain in relief camps, and various districts of Manipur continue to be segregated along ethnic lines. While violence has subsided compared to the earlier phases of the conflict, sporadic incidents of gunfire, ambushes, and other hostilities remain prevalent, particularly in areas such as Kangpokpi and Churachandpur.

The Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) in South West Sadar Hills has also alleged involvement from several militant factions in the recent attack and has accused Naga insurgent groups of targeting Kuki ancestral territories. There has been no immediate response from the NSCN-IM or ZUF (K) regarding these allegations. The assault illustrates the ongoing volatility and insecurity faced by communities in this region as tensions persist.
