Karnataka Politician Muniyappa Urges Respect for Seniority in Portfolios
K.H. Muniyappa, a prominent figure in Karnataka's Congress party, has raised concerns regarding the recent allocation of ministerial portfolios, emphasising the need for allocations that benefit society. During a press briefing in Devanahalli, Mr. Muniyappa refused to assume responsibility for the Food and Civil Supplies Department, arguing that the party should have prioritised more significant portfolios for senior leaders like himself.
Mr. Muniyappa specifically requested either the Social Welfare or Agriculture portfolio, stating, "The party should correct itself. Seniority has not been respected in the Cabinet." He expressed considerable dissatisfaction, indicating that he would not take charge of his assigned department until the situation was rectified.
Close associates reported that Mr. Muniyappa is particularly keen on obtaining the Social Welfare Department. This interest comes as internal reservations for Scheduled Castes are being implemented after extensive struggles and legal challenges. He voiced his concern regarding the potential allocation of crucial resources to a member of the 'Dalit (Right)' community, in light of ongoing community tensions.
Mr. Muniyappa highlighted his long-standing loyalty to the Congress party, stating, "I treated Congress like mother... I have been a loyal party soldier for the past 50 years." He also noted the importance of seniority in allocation decisions, reminding that he, along with fellow legislators Ramalinga Reddy and R.V. Deshpande, has been elected multiple times.
He warned that ignoring senior party members could lead to challenges for Congress in future elections, notably in 2028. As a veteran politician who has won eight elections, Mr. Muniyappa's perspectives carry weight within the political landscape of Karnataka.
Moreover, he has taken his grievances directly to key figures within the party, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The ongoing debates surrounding portfolio allocations underscore significant tensions within the Congress party at this pivotal moment in Karnataka's political framework.
