Cockroach Janata Party Criticises Government Over Data Breach
The Cockroach Janata Party demands accountability after JEE data exposure highlights flaws in India's education system.

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) held a press conference on June 4, 2026, challenging the Indian government's competence following a security lapse involving the data of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) candidates. This incident has raised significant concerns about the management of India's education system and the safety of student data.

CJP leaders spoke out against the reported exposure of sensitive candidate information, which was due to a misconfigured cloud storage system. The party's campaign, which originated on social media, gained momentum as leaders urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to dismiss Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for his perceived failures in the sector.

Ashutosh Ranka, a spokesperson for the CJP and an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and the London School of Economics, argued that this breach illustrates a serious lack of cybersecurity standards. "Names, phone numbers, and images of nearly two lakh students got exposed. In a country that has produced techies leading top technology companies across the world, the education minister and the government are so incompetent that they are unable to run basic systems securely," he stated.

Ranka condemned the education minister's handling of the situation, asserting that this incident could jeopardise students' futures. He further emphasised that positions of responsibility within public institutions should be filled by individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge.

The spokesperson also scrutinised the response from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, the node in charge of the examination this year. Ranka dismissed IIT Roorkee's claim that the exposed data was in a 'read-only' format as inadequate. He questioned how such a fundamental system could have failed, remarking, "Sixteen, 17, and 18-year-olds are discovering vulnerabilities and alerting the Computer Emergency Response Team. This shows the level of competence of the people running the system."

The issue came to light when a teenage cybersecurity researcher discovered that candidate records and admit-card documents were accessible without authentication. On June 2, 2026, IIT Roorkee acknowledged this problem and claimed that corrective actions were underway, reassuring the public that no alterations to the exposed data would be possible.

Ranka has urged the government to release details of all data breaches and cybersecurity failures, highlighting the need for transparency. He stated, "We want to know where this country's data has landed and who all have access to it. Details of all such breaches, especially those that could impact national security, should be made public."

The CJP is preparing for a protest scheduled for June 6, with founder Abhijeet Dipke returning from the United States to seek permissions for the demonstration at Jantar Mantar, a popular protest site in New Delhi. The protests aim to maintain a peaceful approach while pressing for governmental accountability. In addition to seeking Pradhan's resignation, the CJP is open to dialogue with both the government and the Opposition concerning its demands.

This political movement has its roots in a controversy from last month, when Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made remarks referring to certain individuals as "cockroaches" and "parasites." This comment ignited a wave of criticism on social media, with the CJP co-opting the term as a political symbol, transforming a youth movement into a structured campaign for change.
