Teenager Harassed in Bihar's Samastipur Amid Rising Incidents

A disturbing incident of harassment involving a teenage girl has been reported in Samastipur, Bihar, just days after a similar case in Jamui district. The encounter surfaced online, showing a group of men verbally abusing and attempting to physically intimidate the girl in broad daylight. The authorities took swift action, arresting four individuals linked to the incident following the video's circulation on social media.

Samastipur Police confirmed on Thursday that the viral video showcased individuals behaving inappropriately towards a minor. As stated in a police release, "The incident is believed to have occurred about a week ago near a bridge in Jagat Singhpur village." Upon verifying the authenticity of the video, an FIR was filed, invoking provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Information Technology Act.

Local police began monitoring social media after receiving reports regarding the video and acted promptly to apprehend suspects, whose identities were established within a short timeframe. The authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover further details surrounding the event. As of now, the identities of those involved on video remain unclear.

In reaction to the incident, Rajeev Ranjan, a leader of the Janata Dal (United), condemned the acts of harassment, asserting that perpetrators would face stringent legal repercussions. He also cautioned against the dangers of sharing such videos on social media outlets.

Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, intensified the scrutiny of the state government’s performance in managing law and order. He expressed grave concerns, stating, "The public molestation of a minor girl in Samastipur is yet another grim indictment of the law and order situation in BJP-ruled Bihar."

Yadav further questioned the response of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, speculating whether the government would trivialise such incidents as mere 'stray events.' He highlighted an alleged pattern of negligence regarding caste considerations in law enforcement actions.

Incidents of this nature have sparked outrage among the public and drawn significant media attention. Only days prior, a similar occurrence in Jamui led law enforcement to file charges against more than 120 profiles on social media for sharing footage that could compromise the victims' identities.

The situation remains tense as police continue their investigations while urging the public to refrain from sharing videos that may reveal the minors' identities. The local community and civil rights activists are calling for greater accountability and protective measures to ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals in the region.
