Taylor Swift Tributes Dolly Parton at VMAs for Best Video Award

At the 2026 Video Music Awards held on Sunday, Taylor Swift honoured the late Dolly Parton by dedicating her award for Best Music Video to the legendary country musician. Swift's winning video, "The Fate of Ophelia," which features on her latest album, "The Life of a Showgirl," was both written and directed by the artist herself.

In her acceptance speech, Swift expressed her gratitude for receiving the award, stating, "Thank you so much for giving this award to this video. I’m so proud of it. To the fans, thank you for voting on it." She elaborated on the creative process behind the video, mentioning her goal to create the illusion of a continuous shot, which involved learning techniques to hide cuts.

Swift took the opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of her team, highlighting choreographer Mandy Moore, production designer Ethan Tobman, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, and editor Chancler Haynes. "And lastly, but most importantly," she added, "I want to thank and dedicate this award to one person, without whom this wouldn’t be happening, and that person is the ultimate showgirl, Dolly Parton."

In her heartfelt tribute, Swift elaborated on Parton’s impact, stating, "Every single song that she wrote, her storytelling was so vivid and so rich. Listening to her songs, it’s like watching the best music video you have ever seen in your life."

She further reminisced about Parton’s ability to channel her life experiences into her artistry, saying, "She handled this thing with such grace and joy and love and gratitude for the fact that she got to do this."

Swift concluded her tribute by expressing her admiration for Parton, stating, "I’m lucky I got to be one of them, and I will always be one of them. I love you all so very much, and I think we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time."

In addition to the award, Swift recently released an extended version of her album, including four new tracks. The single, titled "Patient Zero," features a video co-starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, which was also debuted at the VMAs. Swift has received a nomination for Single of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards for her song "I Knew It, I Knew You," which is part of the "Toy Story 5" soundtrack.
