Tamil Nadu Reinstates Early Morning Film Screenings
The Tamil Nadu government has announced the return of early morning film screenings, allowing new Tamil film releases to start at 6 am during their opening week. This decision, implemented by Chief Minister Vijay's administration, enables cinemas to conduct five shows a day starting from 6 am and concluding by 2.30 am. Moreover, theatres may host up to six screenings on weekends as well as on national and state holidays. Previously, theatres in the region were limited to four screenings per day, with the first show commencing at 9 am.
The resumption of early morning screenings marks a significant change, particularly for the upcoming releases of Suriya's film 'Scene' and Nayanthara's 'Mookuthi Amman 2', both set to debut on November 6. These films are expected to be the first beneficiaries of the new directive, providing them with an additional opportunity to attract audiences.
The earlier ban on early morning shows was imposed by the previous government, led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), following a tragic incident where a fan died during celebrations for Ajith Kumar's film 'Thunivu'. This led to stricter regulations governing film show timings by the government at the time. The reinstatement of these screenings highlights the current administration's focus on revitalising the Tamil film industry and maximising revenue for new releases.
The revised regulations also allow for enhanced scheduling flexibility, which could positively influence box office numbers for films released during the festive season and other significant dates. With the introduction of early screenings, theatres will now have an opportunity to cater to a wider audience base, including early risers and film enthusiasts eager to view new content as soon as it becomes available.
This decision could revitalise the cinema-going experience in Tamil Nadu, encouraging packed theatres and potentially boosting revenues for both producers and exhibitors alike, as festive moods and increased viewer engagement may coincide with the new policy implementation.
