Tamil Nadu's New Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay Outlines Priorities
C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, 2026. His first actions in office included the signing of three significant government files aimed at addressing key concerns for the state’s residents.
One of the highlighted initiatives is the granting of 200 units of free electricity to domestic consumers who utilise up to 500 units of electricity bimonthly. This measure is expected to alleviate some of the financial burdens on households and support low-income families.
In addition to the energy initiative, Chief Minister Vijay has established a dedicated unit known as the 'Singa Pen Special Force'. This elite force is specifically designed to enhance women's safety across the state, ensuring that complaints related to this issue are addressed promptly and effectively.
A further significant measure taken by the new government is the creation of an Anti-Narcotic Task Force. This unit aims to combat illegal drug trafficking and the use of psychotropic substances. It will consist of 65 police stations strategically spread across 37 districts and nine cities. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety and tackle drug-related issues more comprehensively.
Vijay assumed office amid a gathering of supporters at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. Following his swearing-in ceremony, he moved to the Secretariat to conduct further official business and signed additional documents. The initial photographs from his first day showcased a picture of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai in the background of his office.
He also appointed senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer P. Senthil Kumar as his Secretary-I, and G. Laxmi Priya, IAS, as Secretary-II. As his administration began, the social media handle @CMOTamilNadu was updated to reflect ongoing developments from his office.
These initial steps reflect Chief Minister Vijay’s commitment to transparency and responsive governance as he begins his term with a focus on energy provision, women’s safety, and drug enforcement policies for Tamil Nadu.
