Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Supports Global Tamil Community on Remembrance Day
C. Joseph Vijay, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, conveyed his solidarity with the global Tamil diaspora on Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day. This statement was made on May 18, a day that commemorates the end of the nearly 30-year-long Sri Lankan Civil War in 2009, which concluded with significant loss of civilian life.
In a post on the social platform X, Vijay, who leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, expressed, "Let us hold the memories of Mullivaikkal in our hearts. We will always stand by the rights of our Tamil kindred living across the seas."
Mullivaikkal, a coastal village located in the Mullaitivu district, is recognised as a site of immense tragedy, having become a symbol of the severe wartime atrocities endured by Tamil civilians. According to estimates from the United Nations, it is believed that between 40,000 and 70,000 Tamil civilians perished during the final phases of the conflict.
The observance of this day represents a significant moment for Tamils worldwide, uniting communities in commemorating those who suffered during the conflict. Vijay's commitment underscores ongoing discussions regarding the rights and recognition of Tamils both in India and globally, particularly focusing on historical injustices.
As memorials were held across various countries, the Tamil diaspora highlighted their continued struggle for justice and acknowledgment of their losses. The statement by Chief Minister Vijay aligns with ongoing advocacy for Tamil rights, resonating strongly within the community.
This year’s observance of Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day serves not only as a day of mourning but also as a rallying point for Tamil unity and resilience, reflecting on a painful past while looking towards a hopeful future.
