Grand Welcome for Rape Accused in Uttar Pradesh Sparks Outrage

A controversial incident unfolded in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, where Sushil Prajapati, a man accused of rape, was greeted with an extravagant celebration after his release on bail. Videos of the event have gone viral, drawing significant public outrage. The visuals depict Prajapati, formerly a member of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, being adorned with marigold garlands and carried on the shoulders of his supporters. This display incited a backlash on social media, with many condemning the support shown for an individual facing serious allegations.

Prajapati was accused of sexually assaulting an LLB student at a flat in Ghaziabad. According to the victim's complaint, she had met Prajapati in 2021 when he offered to assist her in launching her law career and promised financial aid. The victim stated that he drove her to a flat under the pretense that senior lawyers would be joining them. After consuming a soft drink which she claimed rendered her unconscious, the student alleged that he raped her, subsequently threatening her life should she report the incident. The complaint prompted authorities to register a case at the Muradnagar Police Station on August 8, 2025.

Initially, Prajapati evaded capture and a reward of ₹25,000 was announced for information leading to his arrest. He was apprehended on August 11, 2025, and spent nearly nine months in custody before being granted bail on May 17, 2026. The incident elicited significant concern within the community regarding the implications of glorifying an accused individual.

Local police have acknowledged the viral videos and expressed intentions to investigate the circumstances surrounding the public celebration following Prajapati’s bail release. The incident has raised important questions about the societal responses to serious allegations of sexual violence and what they signify about prevailing attitudes towards such cases.
