U.S. Approves $198 Million Support Package for Apache Helicopters
The U.S. has greenlit a $198 million package for Apache helicopter support services to India, enhancing military cooperation.

The United States Department of State has sanctioned a potential Foreign Military Sale to India, focusing on sustainment support and associated equipment for AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, estimated at a cost of $198.2 million. This initiative aims to bolster India's operational readiness and long-term maintenance capabilities for its Apache helicopter fleet, crucial for the Indian armed forces' combat aviation.

As outlined in the notice from the U.S. Department of State, India has requested comprehensive sustainment support services. These services include engineering, technical, and logistics assistance, provided by both the U.S. government and contractors. Furthermore, the deal encompasses technical documentation, training personnel, and other elements integral to effective program management.

The proposed sale is seen as a means to strengthen the strategic partnership between the U.S. and India, described by Washington as a major defence ally essential for political stability and economic growth in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia regions. The support package is expected to enhance India's capabilities to respond to both current and emerging threats while fostering homeland defence and improving deterrence against regional challenges.

According to the U.S. administration, this agreement will not disrupt the existing military balance in the region, nor will it impede American defence readiness. The principal contractors involved in the programme are Boeing and Lockheed Martin, both significant players in the defence sector. Boeing's headquarters is located in Arlington, Virginia, while Lockheed Martin is situated in Orlando, Florida.

In summary, the approval of this support package reflects ongoing U.S. commitment to strengthening India's defence capabilities, aligning with broader foreign policy objectives in the region.
