Systematic Sexual Torture by Russian Forces Reported in Ukraine

Recent investigations have unveiled alarming evidence that Russian forces are employing systematic sexual violence against Ukrainian men during the conflict. The findings follow extensive interviews conducted by Ukrainian prosecutors and United Nations investigators with former prisoners, both civilians and soldiers, who describe horrific experiences of sexual torture.

Ukrainian national, Serhii Boychuk, who was captured and held for over two years, recounted enduring severe sexual abuse, including rape and beatings. "They wanted to psychologically break me," remarked Boychuk, reflecting the traumatic nature of his imprisonment. Such testimonies have been corroborated by a growing body of evidence, indicating that sexual violence has become a feature of Russia's military strategy.

The United Nations has documented approximately 310 instances of alleged sexual violence attributed to Russian forces since the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Among the alleged victims, there are 280 men, 26 women, and four girls. The reported acts of violence include gang rape, genital mutilation, and use of electric shocks. Notably, many of the male victims were captured soldiers rather than civilians, a departure from the trend observed in previous conflicts where women were often the primary targets.

Investigators caution that the full extent of the abuse is not entirely known due to the challenges faced in accessing occupied territories for independent investigations. Russian authorities have consistently denied access to these areas, and survivors continue to face stigma, dissuading them from reporting their experiences. Anna Sosonska, a Ukrainian prosecutor involved in these cases, stated, "Sexual abuse is the cheapest method of waging war," highlighting the deliberate tactic employed to inflict psychological damage.

Many former detainees describe being subjected to extreme humiliation, forced to remain in degrading positions or paraded nude. Reports indicate that some prisoners were threatened with further violence, including grotesque acts intended to suppress their ability to reproduce. Prominent among the findings is the implication that these abuses are not isolated incidents but reflect a broader military strategy.

Experts have noted that the systematic nature of the alleged crimes poses questions about the command structures within the Russian military. David Schwendiman, a former prosecutor focused on war crimes, remarked that the patterns observed suggest an orchestrated operation rather than random acts of violence.

The Kremlin has denied allegations of torture, asserting that such claims are politically motivated. However, the documented behaviours of forces in the field suggest complicity at various levels, with former officials stating that there were no formal restrictions against violence, effectively endorsing the types of abuses described.

Further investigations reveal that high-ranking officials in the Russian military and prison systems have been implicated in endorsing such violent strategies, raising international concerns over accountability and the treatment of prisoners of war.
