Sunrisers Leeds Clinch Eliminator Spot with Win Over Super Giants

Sunrisers Leeds advanced to the knockout stage of The Hundred women's tournament following a 41-run victory over Manchester Super Giants at Old Trafford. The Sunrisers set a target of 167 runs, and the Super Giants struggled throughout their innings, ultimately finishing at 125 for 8.

Jess Jonassen was instrumental for the Sunrisers, taking three wickets for just 21 runs. She dismissed key players Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh, who scored 28 and 13 runs respectively. In the searing Manchester heat, the Super Giants faced mounting pressure, leading to desperation within their batting order.

In a surprising move, Kathryn Bryce was retired out after making 15 runs off 14 balls. This was the second instance this season where she had been removed in this manner, having faced a similar situation while playing for Manchester Originals. Grace Scrivens was the top scorer for the Super Giants with 31 runs from 24 balls, but it wasn't enough to steer her team to victory.

The Sunrisers initially made solid progress with their batters, posting a score of 166 for 4. Annabel Sutherland was the standout performer, finishing her innings unbeaten on 62 runs from 36 balls, which included three sixes and six fours. Phoebe Litchfield also contributed significantly with a quickfire 27 off 12 deliveries.

The Super Giants' bowling attack was led by Mady Villiers, who claimed 2 wickets for 25 runs. Despite some early promise, the Super Giants could not find their rhythm and subsequently fell short.

As a result of this match, Sunrisers Leeds moved into the top three of the competition standings and will now face Southern Brave in the Eliminator at The Oval on Friday. The winner of that match will go on to play Trent Rockets in the final at Lord’s on Sunday.

As the tournament progresses, the competition is heating up, with more matches scheduled. On Wednesday, Welsh Fire will host London Spirit, while Birmingham Phoenix will play MI London. Although none of the four sides in these matches can qualify for the knockout rounds, they will fight for pride and rankings.
