New research indicates maternal anaemia may impair brain development in babies, affecting key areas linked to learning and emotion.

Research has revealed that maternal anaemia during pregnancy might significantly influence infant brain development. A study published in the journal 'Brain Communications' found that babies born to anaemic mothers exhibited smaller brain sizes compared to those delivered by mothers without the condition. The study identified notable differences in portions of the brain responsible for movement, learning, and emotional regulation.

The investigation was conducted by a team from King’s College London and the University of Cape Town, involving over 300 mothers and their infants in Cape Town. Throughout the research period, the babies underwent multiple brain scans between the ages of three months and two years. The findings showed that infants born to anaemic mothers had, on average, a total brain volume approximately 4% smaller than those born to non-anaemic mothers. This was particularly striking as the study only included mothers with mild anaemia, indicating that even slight cases may have implications for early brain development.

Particularly affected areas include the putamen, caudate nucleus, and corpus callosum—regions associated with essential functions such as information processing and executive functions like planning and decision-making. Notably, the disparities did not diminish as the children matured; instead, they appeared to widen during the initial two years of life. For instance, the corpus callosum in infants born to anaemic mothers was around 4% smaller at 12 months and 6% smaller by 24 months.

These findings carry significant implications, especially as previous studies linked maternal anaemia to lower developmental scores in children. The team of researchers suggests that their findings could help clarify earlier observations about cognitive development in children born to anaemic mothers. However, while a relationship between maternal anaemia and brain development has been established, the researchers caution against concluding that all infants born to anaemic mothers will experience cognitive difficulties.

Anaemia affects a considerable number of women during pregnancy, with over a third of pregnant women globally being impacted. The highest prevalence rates are observed in regions such as sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Iron deficiency is frequently cited as a primary cause, though infections and other health issues may also be contributing factors. In response to these findings, the study’s authors underscore the importance of identifying and addressing anaemia, particularly in pregnant women. Effective screening processes can help healthcare providers identify those who may require treatment, which might include oral or intravenous iron, depending on the individual case.

Moreover, the study highlights that improving nutritional intake alone may not suffice when underlying health problems or infections lead to anaemia. An intriguing aspect of this research was the utilisation of portable MRI technology, which successfully detected brain differences identified by traditional high-field machines. This advancement could enhance research and monitoring capabilities in areas where standard medical equipment is less accessible.

The overall implications of this study urge a reconsideration of anaemia as a critical maternal and child health issue. Ensuring a mother's health during pregnancy appears vital not just for the safety of childbirth but also for nourishing the brain development of future generations.
