Strengthening Ties: India and China Trade Relations Improve
Chinese and Indian trade grows amid diplomatic efforts to mend ties, reflecting a cautious reengagement between the two nations.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to India for the BRICS Summit has garnered significant global attention. This marks his first trip to India since 2019, as the two nations work to heal relations following deadly clashes in Ladakh in 2020.

A report in the Financial Times highlights the renewed commitment between India and China, noting efforts by both Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enhance diplomatic interactions. Since 2020, there have been tentative attempts to improve ties, demonstrated through engagements at regional forums such as those in Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and China.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, alongside External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, have been instrumental in these discussions. The two countries have also reported a significant increase in trade, with figures indicating a rise of 12.4 percent last year, bringing bilateral trade to a record $155 billion, more than double the $71.6 billion noted a decade prior.

In the first seven months of the current year, trade has surged by 23 percent compared to the same timeframe last year. Chinese investments in India are also on the rise, with companies in sectors such as technology and energy actively exploring opportunities within the Indian market. Notably, the Indian government has relaxed scrutiny on certain Chinese investments in solar energy and electronics.

Recent developments also include the resumption of direct flights between the two nations for the first time since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and the reopening of border trade at three Himalayan checkpoints. Furthermore, both countries have organised a Hindu-Buddhist pilgrimage to sacred sites in Tibet, highlighting deepening people-to-people ties.

Praveen Donthi, a senior analyst at Crisis Group, described this movement towards cooperation as a 'cautious reengagement.' He stated that recent diplomatic efforts seem to transform the regional rivalry into a competitive yet cooperative dynamic.

As China seeks to broaden its economic influence, there appears to be an underlying hope that India may take a step back from American influence, offering China access to India's expansive market potential.

Simultaneously, The Economist has focused on India in light of rising global bond yields, suggesting that the Indian government bond market appears resilient compared to its Western counterparts. The piece investigates the possible causes of this phenomenon, revealing discrepancies in the government’s borrowing patterns as a significant factor.

While 10-year yields on US government bonds have risen substantially this year, Indian bonds issued by the government have experienced a smaller increase in yield. The report attributes this stability to the fact that the majority of India's government bonds are owned by domestic institutions—including banks, insurance companies, and pension funds—rather than foreign investors, who hold a mere 3 percent. This ownership structure suggests a lower vulnerability to abrupt sell-offs by foreign capital.

India's consistent economic growth, noted as 7.8 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, has also been a factor. Despite rising bond yields, the nation maintains a comparatively low inflation rate of 4.6 percent over the last decade, while its fiscal deficit has decreased below 2 percent. This financial stability sets India apart from other major economies, reinforcing the view that its bond market can withstand external pressures more effectively.

As countries navigate the complexities of the global economy, India's experience highlights the importance of robust public finances as a stabilising factor for government bond markets.
