Sri Lanka Secures Spot in Women's Asia Cup Final Against India

Sri Lanka triumphed in a captivating low-scoring semi-final against Pakistan in the Women's Asia Cup 2026, held at the Dubai International Stadium. Under the leadership of captain Chamari Athapaththu, Sri Lanka demonstrated strong bowling discipline, restricting Pakistan to a modest total and completing their chase with eight balls remaining.

Winning the toss, Chamari Athapaththu opted to field first. Sugandika Kumari made an immediate impact, striking in only the second over, which set a challenging tone for the Pakistani batting order. Shawal Zulfiqar and Gull Feroza looked to respond effectively, but their partnership was cut short when Athapaththu dismissed Zulfiqar.

Following the early breakthroughs, Athapaththu continued her assault by removing Ayesha Zafar cheaply, while Chamudi Praboda took the crucial wicket of Sadaf Shams, leaving Pakistan struggling. However, Pakistan's captain, Fatima Sana, along with Feroza, managed to stabilise the innings with a 40-run partnership before Praboda dismissed Feroza, who scored 32 off 32 balls.

Sana, undeterred, pushed Pakistan's total to 130 for 5 over their allotted 20 overs, finishing unbeaten on 47 and providing a fighting chance for her team.

In reply, Sri Lanka faced early challenges as Fatima Sana initiated a promising start with the ball, claiming two quick wickets in her opening over. Despite the pressure, Imesha Dulani kept the opposition on their toes, but soon Sri Lanka found themselves at risk as they lost their fourth wicket.

Amidst the rising tension, Harshitha Samarawickrama and Kavisha Dilhari formed a critical partnership of 67 runs, aiding the Sri Lankan innings as they diligently rotated the strike and scored runs steadily. Just as they appeared to seize control, Sana regained momentum for Pakistan by removing both batters in a single over.

Nonetheless, Nilakshi de Silva and Kaushani Nuthyanaga showcased their composure, effectively steering Sri Lanka towards victory with eight balls to spare. Their performance enabled Sri Lanka to secure a spot in the final, where they will face India on Sunday, September 13, at the Dubai International Stadium.
