Sonam Wangchuk Claims Breach of Trust by Union Ministers

Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent activist known for his educational reform efforts, has voiced frustration with the Indian government following his recent hunger strike. On 5 August, he alleged that Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh reneged on an agreement regarding photographs taken during the conclusion of his 26-day fast.

In a conversation with Rajdeep Sardesai, Consulting Editor at India Today, Wangchuk expressed his disappointment over the ministers releasing images of the event, stating that there was a clear understanding that no photos should be shared until key political figures from the Opposition and student representatives were involved.

"The ministers had their own photographers. They pledged to me that they wouldn’t release images. They broke that promise," the 59-year-old said, highlighting his feeling of betrayal.

Culturally in Ladakh, it is customary for government representatives to offer juice or soup to individuals concluding a protest fast after meeting their demands. However, Wangchuk emphasized that the occasion should reflect a collective effort, involving people from across the political spectrum. He specified, "I wanted it to be a joint gathering."

When the ministers arrived, he suggested an alternative plan. "I proposed that I would end the fast, but the news would be released on my terms, showcasing photographs of Opposition leaders, making it a collective announcement."

According to Wangchuk, the ministers initially accepted this arrangement, with senior officials from the Intelligence Bureau present as witnesses. "I told the IB officers, 'You are witnesses to this agreement. No images will be shared with the media until I announce it with all parties involved.' They agreed," he explained.

Wangchuk claimed this agreement was violated soon after. "I was waiting to receive photographs of the leaders from other parties when a senior IB officer rushed in to inform me that these images were already appearing on television channels," he said.

Rejecting accusations of having made a secret deal with the government, Wangchuk reaffirmed his commitment to his cause, saying, "If I wanted to negotiate, I could have done it much earlier. I wouldn’t have needed to endure a 26-day hunger strike."

The activist's hunger strike commenced on 28 June at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, where he protested alongside the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against educational issues tied to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). His health deteriorated by 18 July, leading to police intervention and his transfer to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.

Following a late-night video message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding stringent anti-paper leak laws, Wangchuk concluded his fast on 24 July. Subsequently, photographs of Nadda and Singh presenting him with a cup of soup circulated widely.

Reflecting on the outcome, Wangchuk lamented that this incident had eroded his trust in political leaders across various parties.

"They broke the promise. So I've lost trust in all these leaders," he stated, further questioning the integrity of political commitments in India. This development adds to the ongoing discourse on governmental accountability and the treatment of public dissent in the country.
