Six Lok Sabha MPs Join Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena in Maharashtra
In a notable political development, six members of the Lok Sabha announced their formal induction into the faction of the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The announcement came during a press conference held in Mumbai, marking a decisive shift in the state's political landscape.
The six MPs, who previously belonged to the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, publically aligned themselves with Mr. Shinde, stating their commitment to functioning under his leadership. "We have completed the procedure in legal, constitutional and parliamentary framework. We do foolproof operations. All the six MPs have joined the Shiv Sena. Operation Tiger has been successful," Eknath Shinde announced at the event.
This move has been viewed as a strategic effort to bolster the party’s influence in Maharashtra, transforming Shiv Sena’s numeral strength in the Lok Sabha from seven to thirteen, thus solidifying its position as the second-largest party in the state. The augmentation of seats is expected to enhance the party's role within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the national level.
Aaditya Thackeray, a leader of the rival Shiv Sena (UBT), characterised this realignment as part of a broader strategy by the Shinde faction and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to consolidate power and potentially alter constitutional structures. He stated, "The people of India stopped them in the 2024 elections. But all these things are being done so that they can change the Constitution written by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar."
During the press event, Eknath Shinde expressed support for the newly joined MPs, emphasising that they would not face disrespect or difficulties in their political agendas. He assured them that their concerns would be addressed under the governance of what he termed a "double engine government," a phrase often used to refer to the cooperative functioning of the state and central government.
Significant figures within the party were acknowledged for their role in facilitating this move. Notably, Tanaji Sawant, Pratap Sarnaik, and Dr. Shrikant Shinde were recognised for their contributions during the transition. The six MPs who joined the newly minted faction are Nagesh Patil Ashtikar, Sanjay Deshmukh, Sanjay Dina Patil, Bhausaheb Wakchoure, Omraje Nimbalkar, and Sanjay Bandu Jadhav.
Legal expert Anant Kalse remarked on the procedures required for such a political shift. He pointed out that any split claimed by these MPs must be officially recognised by the Lok Sabha Speaker and that the newly formed group would have to be acknowledged by the Election Commission.
This development marks another chapter in the ongoing political turmoil within the Shiv Sena following the factional split precipitated by Eknath Shinde four years prior. As the political landscape continues to evolve, all eyes remain on the unfolding events in Maharashtra’s governance and its implications for national politics.
