Significant Earthquake Causes Destruction and Loss in Colombia
A 7.4-magnitude earthquake devastates western Colombia, resulting in fatalities and widespread structural damage.

A powerful earthquake registering 7.4 on the Richter scale has struck western Colombia, claiming the lives of at least 69 individuals and causing extensive destruction across multiple cities. The quake occurred on Monday, with its epicentre located near San Jose del Palmar, a small community in the Choco region, approximately 400 kilometres west of the capital, Bogotá. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Colombian Geological Service, the earthquake hit at a depth of 107 kilometres.

Following the seismic event, a number of buildings have collapsed, trapping residents beneath the rubble and resulting in numerous injuries. The impact of the quake was felt as far away as the capital, prompting many residents to evacuate their homes. Cities such as Pereira, Quibdó, Cali, and Manizales have reported severe damage, underscoring the widespread devastation caused by this natural disaster.

Authorities are now cautiously issuing warnings regarding potential aftershocks, which could exacerbate the current situation. Following the main quake, two aftershocks were recorded, with magnitudes of 2.8 and 4.8 respectively. The Colombian Geological Service emphasised that this earthquake is the most powerful to be documented in Colombia over the past decade.

While minor tremors, locally referred to as 'temblores', occur frequently in both central and western Colombia, major earthquakes of a magnitude above 6.0 are considerably less common. A catastrophic example from 1999 highlights this rarity, when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake near Armenia resulted in over 1,100 fatalities.

Colombia's newly inaugurated President Abelardo de la Espriella announced that he is overseeing the government's immediate response to the crisis in San Jose del Palmar, reinforcing the need for rapid action to address the emergency. The devastation from this earthquake presents significant challenges for rescue and recovery efforts in the affected regions, as communities begin to assess the full extent of the damage caused.
