Sheikh Hasina Announces Intent to Return to Bangladesh This Year

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has declared her intention to return to her home country within this year, nearly two years after being ousted and seeking refuge in India. In an interview with NDTV, Hasina expressed her determination, claiming attempts to undermine her political party, the Awami League, will not succeed.

Last November, Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal convicted Hasina of crimes against humanity, sentencing her to death. Hasina vehemently rejected this verdict, describing it as politically motivated and part of an unconstitutional process aimed at rendering the Awami League leaderless.

She stated, "The verdict against me is not justice. It is part of an illegal, unconstitutional, and politically motivated process." Hasina suggested that the judicial system has been manipulated for political gain.

In her outspoken remarks, she noted her resilience in the face of numerous threats, including the assassination of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, who is recognised as Bangladesh's founding leader. "I do not fear death. Many conspiracies have been hatched against me. But breaking through every web of conspiracy, I stood beside the people of Bangladesh," she stated.

The tribunal’s ruling accused Hasina of being accountable for orchestrating a violent crackdown during student-led protests in July 2024, which resulted in an estimated 1,400 fatalities, as reported by the United Nations. Specific charges included deploying military resources like drones and helicopters against civilian protesters.

Hasina condemned the tribunal's decision as biased and described it as a manipulation by an interim government devoid of elected legitimacy. Meanwhile, India's Ministry of External Affairs has maintained a neutral stance, affirming its commitment to the stability and democratic aspirations of the Bangladeshi populace, while continuing to engage with local stakeholders.

With a strong focus on her political legacy, Hasina highlighted her five-term premiership, linking her life’s work to the progress of Bangladesh and its people. As she reaffirms her commitment to return, the political landscape in Bangladesh continues to be tense, with her supporters and critics both watching closely.

Despite the challenges ahead, Hasina remains resolute in her belief that she will overcome past obstacles. She concluded her statements by pledging, "I will return to my country this year."
