Shah Rukh Khan's Film 'King' Sets Record with Overseas Rights Sale
Shah Rukh Khan continues to assert his dominance in overseas markets, as his latest film, 'King', has reportedly sold its international rights for ₹175 crore (approximately $18 million). This figure has set a new precedent in Indian cinema, eclipsing previous sales and demonstrating the actor's enduring popularity. The rights were obtained by Phars Films, shifting the overseas distribution from the customary Yash Raj Films, which had previously managed Shah Rukh Khan's films 'Pathaan' and 'Jawan', both of which were significant box office successes in 2023.
Phars Films, experienced in international distribution, has previously collaborated with Yash Raj Films on various projects and has independently handled titles such as 'Saaho'. The ₹175 crore figure includes a minimum guarantee amount, reflecting a strong belief in the film’s potential performance in theatres.
Distributor agreements typically allow distributors to retain about 50% of the box office earnings. Therefore, for 'King' to reach a break-even point, it needs to generate between $37 million to $40 million—translating to approximately ₹350-375 crore in gross earnings globally.
Given that both 'Pathaan' and 'Jawan' raked in approximately ₹400 crore overseas, 'King' will have to achieve similar, if not greater, revenues to be deemed successful. In light of its ambitious financial expectations, the film must at least match or exceed performances by esteemed films such as 'Dhurandhar 2' (₹460 crore) and 'RRR' (₹430 crore), two of the highest-grossing Indian films internationally.
Directed by Siddharth Anand, 'King' features a notable cast that includes Shah Rukh Khan, Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, and others. This project is particularly special for Shah Rukh Khan, as it marks the first time he will share the screen with his daughter, Suhana Khan, who recently made her acting debut in 'The Archies'. The film is slated for a theatrical release on December 24, 2023. This unique release spot could provide a strategic advantage during the festive season, potentially attracting a larger audience to cinemas during the holidays.
