Glenn Phillips and Jacob Duffy Lead New Zealand to Victory Over India
New Zealand secured a commanding victory over India in the fourth T20 International (T20I) held in Auckland, winning by 87 runs. This match marked a significant turnaround for the home team, who had earlier conceded an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series.
Glenn Phillips was the standout performer for New Zealand, scoring a sensational 107 runs, marking his third T20I century. Despite the early loss of Tim Seifert and Daryl Mitchell during the powerplay, Phillips maintained his impressive form. He faced only 49 deliveries, hitting six fours and ten sixes to propel his team.
Michael Bracewell provided strong support, adding a quickfire 65 runs off 25 balls. His innings included ten boundaries, replicating Phillips’ aggressive scoring style. The partnership was instrumental in helping New Zealand set a new record for their highest-ever total in T20Is, finishing the innings with a total of 259 runs for the loss of seven wickets. This figure surpassed their previous record of 254 runs against Scotland in 2022.
In response, India faced a challenging chase right from the start. Winning the toss, they elected to field first, a decision that initially seemed promising. However, they quickly found themselves in trouble as Jacob Duffy took both opening batsmen, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, in the first over. Kishan was making his return after an injury layoff.
Although Abhishek Sharma and Shreyas Iyer managed to score 27 and 22 runs respectively, India struggled to maintain momentum. The required run rate escalated, significantly affecting the middle order's ability to recover. Duffy finished with impressive figures of four wickets for 23 runs over four overs, marking a critical contribution to New Zealand's victory.
India concluded their innings with a total of 172 runs for the loss of nine wickets. With this match added to the series, Duffy achieved the second-best bowling figures and New Zealand heads towards the final T20I on a confident note.
The last match of the series is set to take place on 1 November in Hamilton, following a series where India has largely dominated. This fourth T20I showcased New Zealand’s resilience as they look to finish the series on a high note, facing an uphill battle against a strong Indian side that has shown remarkable form across the previous matches.
