Seven Confirmed Dead After Ukrainian Drone Strike in Russia

Russian authorities reported that a Ukrainian drone struck a beach in Gelendzhik, located on the Black Sea, killing at least seven individuals, including three children. The incident has raised concerns about escalating hostilities as it reportedly aimed at a Russian naval base approximately 25 miles from the attack site. Footage of the strike is currently under review by BBC Verify.

Earlier this week, another alleged drone strike targeted a warehouse belonging to the largest online retailer in Russia, Wildberries, situated about 112 miles east of Moscow. This drone attack followed a series of missile strikes carried out by Russia on Ukrainian cities, including an incident that resulted in nine casualties in Kyiv.

In the wake of these drone strikes, the Russian government has intensified measures to control the narrative surrounding these attacks. Wildberries has implemented a ban on smartphones within its warehouses to prevent employees from documenting and sharing footage of the strikes. A notice cited by the Telegram channel Ostorozhno Novosti indicated that from 3 August, only non-camera mobile phones would be allowed on site.

The Russian state media has generally played down the significance of Ukrainian drone strikes, focusing instead on Russian military operations. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Western nations of supporting what she termed terrorist activity following the drone strike on the beach. She stated, "Not long ago, NATO and the EU declared a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism. Now, they themselves have become part of international terrorist activity."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a recent address, expressed that Ukraine seeks peace and has never wished for war. He suggested that external powers, including Washington and Beijing, could encourage Moscow to pursue peace.

Local residents and holidaymakers at Arkhipo-Osipovka, near the beach targeted by the drone, reported no warning sirens prior to the attack. Eyewitnesses described the chaos that ensued, with one holidaymaker stating, "We covered ourselves with sun loungers, and didn’t see where it exploded." The local governor, Veniamin Kondratyev, confirmed the casualties and injuries resulting from the drone strike.

The ongoing conflict continues to pose risks even in remote locations, highlighting the perilous nature of the aerial warfare that has affected both military and civilian spheres in the region.
