Serum Institute and Gates MRI Collaborate on TB Vaccine Research
Serum Institute of India partners with Gates MRI to develop an innovative vaccine against tuberculosis, aiming to combat this global health issue.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) has announced a partnership with the Gates Medical Research Institute (Gates MRI) to develop an experimental vaccine for tuberculosis (TB). This collaboration aims to advance research in tackling one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases, which continues to pose a significant public health challenge globally.

The announcement signifies a pivotal step forward in TB vaccine development. The World Health Organization estimates that TB caused 1.5 million deaths in 2020, making it a major health risk, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This collaboration focuses on harnessing the combined expertise of both organisations, which have a strong track record in medical research and vaccine production.

Dr. Adar Poonawalla, Chief Executive Officer of SII, stated that this partnership would enhance efforts to create a robust vaccine solution, vital for controlling TB in affected populations. The Gates MRI brings extensive experience in vaccine research and development, which complements SII’s strengths in large-scale vaccine manufacturing.

Both organisations are committed to ensuring that the vaccine, once developed, is accessible and affordable for global health needs. The partnership underscores a shared vision to eradicate TB, reflecting ongoing efforts to innovate in vaccine technology and public health.

As advancements continue, stakeholders remain optimistic that this initiative will help to reduce the global burden of TB and save countless lives. More details on the development timeline and specific vaccine candidates are anticipated in future updates.
