Security Alert After Explosives Found Near PM Modi's Event
A significant security incident occurred during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bengaluru when authorities discovered explosives along his route. On Sunday morning, a packet containing two gelatin sticks was located approximately 20 feet from the road near Vaderahalli Gate, shortly before Mr. Modi's convoy was set to pass through the area. He was in the city to commemorate the 45th anniversary of The Art of Living Foundation and the 70th birthday of its founder, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
The gelatin sticks were identified during a routine anti-sabotage check conducted by the Bengaluru South police. R. Srinivas Gowda, the Superintendent of Police for Bengaluru South, reported that the packet was found around 10:30 a.m., just before the Prime Minister arrived at the venue at 11 a.m. The police also acted swiftly to clear nearby petty shops as part of their safety measures.
In addition, a suspect was detained following a threatening phone call made to the police control room earlier that morning. The individual, identified as 40-year-old Lohith, warned of potential explosions near HAL Airport and the Art of Living Ashram during Mr. Modi's attendance. Although he was located and apprehended at his residence in Koramangala, officials have indicated that he may not be connected to the abandoned gelatin sticks found nearby.
The Kaggalipura Police have initiated a separate investigation concerning the origin of the gelatin sticks, with cases registered under the Explosives Act of 1884. Authorities confirmed that multiple teams have been formed to investigate the matter further. During a briefing, S. Girish, Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Central Range, acknowledged the efforts of the police in intercepting the explosives and commended their performance during the threat assessment.
While there are concerns about this incident being classed as a security breach, officials are assessing the situation as investigations continue. The suspect is reportedly known for making previous hoax threats surrounding high-level visits in the city and has a background that suggests possible mental instability. He allegedly claimed during interrogation that he had worked for various intelligence agencies, which has prompted further scrutiny of his statements.
The police remain vigilant as they work to uncover the full details surrounding this suspicious occurrence, ensuring that safety protocols are stringently followed in the aftermath of the incident. As investigations proceed, the local administration is committed to maintaining security at events attended by dignitaries such as Prime Minister Modi.
