Saudi Foreign Minister Addresses Regional Security at BRICS Summit

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, asserted the non-negotiable nature of the kingdom's national security, territorial integrity, and resources during the BRICS summit in New Delhi. He emphasised that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states would not tolerate any aggressive actions against their territories or vital interests, regardless of the justifications used.

Prince Faisal's comments were framed against a backdrop of recent hostilities, including attacks from the Houthi movement in Yemen. The minister referenced a recent incident where a Houthi projectile injured two people in the southern Jazan region of Saudi Arabia, illustrating the ongoing threats facing the kingdom. In a broader context, he pointed to attacks on vital infrastructure, such as drone strikes against the East-West oil pipeline, which have raised alarms over regional stability.

Highlighting the need for diplomacy, Prince Faisal urged a shift in focus from confrontation to de-escalation, advocating for political solutions to address the escalating conflicts. "Continued confrontation cannot be the path to a lasting settlement," he stated, highlighting the urgency of moving towards diplomatic engagement to secure the region's stability and security.

The Foreign Minister also addressed the significance of energy security in the light of disruptions to oil supplies, particularly concerning the strategic Strait of Hormuz. He underscored that any threats to this critical maritime route would have far-reaching implications beyond the region, affecting global energy markets and trade flows.

Notably, the BRICS leaders expressed their 'deep concern' regarding the escalating situation in the Middle East, calling for maximum restraint among nations involved. On the sidelines of the summit, Prince Faisal participated in various discussions aimed at fostering regional security and exploring joint diplomatic ventures. He met with Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, who denounced the recent Houthi attacks and expressed Bahrain's support for Saudi Arabia's security measures.

Furthermore, talks with Indian Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar focused on enhancing bilateral relations, with a shared commitment to promoting political and diplomatic avenues for resolving ongoing regional crises. Similar discussions on economic cooperation occurred with Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, as both leaders explored avenues to strengthen trade and tourism ties.

As tensions in the Middle East fluctuate, the emphasis on security and collaboration within the GCC and with international partners remains vital. The BRICS summit has largely revolved around the implications of the conflict, underlining the interconnected nature of global security and economic stability as challenges within the region continue to evolve.
