Saudi Arabia Intercepts Houthi Attacks Amid Fresh Military Tensions

Saudi Arabia has successfully intercepted a series of ballistic missiles and drones launched by Houthi forces from Yemen, aiming towards key locations including Taif and the strategic port city of Yanbu. This escalation is part of a renewed wave of Houthi attacks that have intensified since the collapse of a long-standing ceasefire earlier this year.

On September 25, the Saudi-led coalition, which has backed the Yemeni government since 2015 against the Houthi movement, reported that it intercepted six ballistic missiles in a coordinated defensive operation. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki confirmed the thwarting of these attacks. "Escalations and violations by the terrorist Houthi militia will be dealt with firmly," he stated on social media platform X.

The recent Houthi operations come as France has announced its intention to send military resources, including soldiers and defence systems, to protect Yanbu, a critical hub for Saudi Arabia's oil exports. French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the mission's defensive nature, stating it would not engage in combat but ensure the safety of this vital infrastructure.

Yanbu serves as the primary crude export terminal for Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea and is linked to the oil-producing regions via the East-West pipeline, known as Petroline. The French support follows rising tensions as the Houthis have intensified their operations, launching attacks that reportedly target not only military installations but also civilian areas.

The situation in Yemen remains volatile, with ongoing conflicts resulting in significant casualties. Recent reports indicate that approximately 150 fighters from both the Houthi and government forces have been killed in just 24 hours of renewed hostilities.

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for a complex attack involving a barrage of missiles and drones targeting military command centres and logistics depots in southern Saudi Arabia. They further affirmed their recent actions included hitting specific Aramco infrastructures in Yanbu and a location in Riyadh, reaffirming their capability to strike deep into Saudi territory.

Despite rising tensions, Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, have stated that Tehran does not direct Houthi operations, asserting that the group operates independently. "The Houthis are responsible for their own actions. They don't take directions from us," Pezeshkian said in a recent interview.

In the context of these developments, alerts were issued by the Saudi Civil Defence for several regions, including Mecca, though these were quickly lifted. Mecca's significance as a pilgrimage site intensifies the implications of any conflict nearby.
