Sai Sudharsan Out of Sri Lanka Test Series Due to Injury

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that top-order batter Sai Sudharsan will miss the forthcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. The announcement was made on Sunday, 9 August. According to the BCCI, Sudharsan is recovering from a right toe stress reaction but has not yet fully returned to competition.

This latest injury is part of a troubling trend for the Indian squad, which is currently grappling with several key player absences. Among those missing the two-Test series are Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar. In light of Sudharsan's absence, Sarfaraz Khan has been called up as a replacement. He has previously played six Tests for India.

The series could significantly impact both nations' prospects in the World Test Championship (WTC), as India and Sri Lanka currently occupy fifth and sixth place in the standings, respectively. India holds a point percentage of 48.15, while Sri Lanka has a point percentage of 41.67. Sudharsan's absence could be felt acutely at the top of the batting order. However, India will take some comfort from the performance of Devdutt Padikkal, who excelled at No. 3 during a recent warm-up match.

In his last Test appearance, Sudharsan scored a solid 81 runs in a victory over Afghanistan, showcasing his capability to contribute in crucial matches. Meanwhile, Indian captain Shubman Gill was under observation during the warm-up game. Although he did not bat in the first innings, he returned to contribute 44 runs off 54 deliveries in the second innings.

Sairaj Bahutule, the spin bowling coach for India, shared insights regarding Gill’s condition. He stated, "It was just a precaution more than anything else. Gill has been absolutely fine, and he’s been training. The management decided we could just take the precaution of not putting him in on the first day. The way he batted in the second innings was flawless, and he’s very much ready for the Test match."

India's squad for the series now reads as follows: Shubman Gill (captain), KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi, and Sarfaraz Khan.

The first Test is set to commence on August 15 in Galle, with the second Test following from August 23 to 27 in Colombo.
