Russian Drone Strikes Kyiv, Donetsk Following Zelenskyy-Trump Talks

In a significant escalation, Russian drone strikes in Ukraine have resulted in the deaths of six individuals, with two fatalities in Kyiv and four others in the Donetsk region. This attack comes just hours after a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump, where discussions about potential peace initiatives took place.

The assault on Kyiv marked a rare daytime attack and was executed using faster, high-flying jet drones that are challenging to intercept. The assault lasted several hours from the morning into early afternoon on Wednesday, injuring over 30 individuals as reported by local officials. Zelenskyy noted the deployment of numerous jet-powered drones aimed at the city.

"Russia continues to turn civilian and critical infrastructure into targets: pharmaceutical facilities, gas stations, railways, communications infrastructure, and shopping malls," he mentioned on the platform X.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that a Russian drone struck a nine-storey commercial building in the city, along with a business centre and warehouses. The Ukrainian oil company Ukrnafta noted that one of its petrol stations in Kyiv was targeted, marking the sixth such incident involving petrol stations in recent weeks. According to authorities, a total of two petrol stations were hit during this latest assault.

Ukrainian railway operator chief executive Oleksandr Pertsovskyi stated that railway infrastructure was also compromised by the drone strikes, resulting in injuries to one of its workers.

In a separate incident, a Russian aerial bomb struck a village in the front-line Donetsk region, claiming at least four lives and injuring an additional four individuals, as outlined by the regional governor via Telegram.

During his meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Zelenskyy sought enhanced supplies of U.S. Patriot air defence missiles to safeguard against anticipated Russian strikes on energy infrastructure during the winter. Although no agreements were reached in this dialogue, Zelenskyy expressed his openness to any format for a ceasefire centered on energy issues, provided it halted attacks on Ukraine's infrastructure.

On Monday, The Financial Times reported that Trump had urged Zelenskyy to refrain from attacks on Russian refineries, concerned about the potential exacerbation of the global diesel shortage and rising fuel prices.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed the media before a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, stating there are currently no conditions favourable for peace negotiations with Ukraine. Peskov noted the open stance of the Russian side towards talks but emphasised that any potential meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy would necessitate the Ukrainian leader travelling to Moscow, which Ukraine has previously rejected.

Peskov added that the timing was not suitable for a peace summit, suggesting that preliminary discussions at an expert level were needed before significant meetings can take place. He remarked, "Generally speaking, in any other circumstances, it would be inappropriate to hold a summit meeting before the groundwork has been laid at expert level, as this would be a waste of time."
