Russia's Missile Strikes in Ukraine Result in Multiple Casualties

Russian missile strikes across Ukraine resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals and left many others injured, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks occurred overnight, with the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia suffering the heaviest toll. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Moscow of using missiles acquired from North Korea, a statement that underscores the ongoing alliance between Russia and its East Asian counterpart.

The use of North Korean weaponry is said to coincide with a significant escalation in hostilities in the region, with Zelenskyy indicating that North Korean supplies are bolstering Russia's military capabilities. He warned that Moscow is not seeking peace but rather preparing for increased military action. "Every step Russia takes – increasing ballistic missile production, bringing in North Korean equipment, preparing for mobilisation – all of this shows that Moscow is preparing not for peace, but for escalation," Zelenskyy stated via social media.

In Zaporizhzhia, at least six fatalities were reported among employees of the Zaporizhstal steel plant, who were attempting to reach shelter when the strikes occurred. The local military administration's head, Ivan Fedorov, shared images demonstrating the devastation caused by the attacks, which included flames engulfing buildings and vehicles.

In addition to Zaporizhzhia, incidents in other regions including Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk led to six additional deaths. Reports from Kyiv indicated that an infectious diseases hospital was struck during the assault, causing alarm among residents. Strikes also caused power outages in frontline cities such as Kherson and Kharkiv.

Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defence claimed that their targets included defence industry facilities and transport logistics centres located in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia. This strategic focus highlights Russia's attempts to hamper Ukraine's capacity to retaliate effectively.

In a counter-move, Ukrainian forces reportedly launched drone strikes against sites in Russia, resulting in the death of one individual in the Voronezh region. The strikes also led to damage and fires within warehouse facilities, demonstrating a continued cycle of retaliatory attacks between the two nations.

As the situation develops, the international community is closely monitoring the escalating violence, with diplomatic efforts to mediate the conflict remaining stalled.
