Rolls-Royce plans significant investment in India, focusing on jet engines and naval propulsion systems for its Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme.

British aero-engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is considering India as its third 'home market' outside the United Kingdom, aiming to leverage opportunities in jet engines, naval propulsion, and advanced engineering. Sashi Mukundan, the Executive Vice-President of Rolls-Royce India, revealed the company's ambitions in an interview with the Press Trust of India (PTI). Mukundan stated that the firm is planning a major investment in India, with the development of a next-generation aero engine for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme being a top priority.

Currently, Rolls-Royce identifies the UK, the United States, and Germany as its primary markets, where it has established a strong presence, including manufacturing capabilities. The potential investment in India is expected to be substantial, although specific figures have not been disclosed. Mukundan emphasised the importance of developing the entire value chain in India, stating, "If everything goes well, it would be a significant investment. What matters is the impact — the development of the ecosystem across defence, manufacturing, and advanced engineering."

Focus on Engine Development for AMCA

Extensive discussions are reportedly underway regarding a partnership with Indian authorities to develop engines for the AMCA programme, which is designed to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Air Force's future combat aircraft. Mukundan expressed confidence in Rolls-Royce's expertise, stating, "If India is thinking about next-generation engines, Rolls-Royce is probably the best partner. We have the capability and experience both in India and globally."

He added that all design work for the engines could be carried out in India, allowing for technology transfer and the potential for joint ownership of new intellectual property rights. This strategic collaboration could provide India with significant control over engine design and manufacturing. Mukundan explained, "Once you own design IP, you have strategic control. Manufacturing then becomes the next stage, which needs to be built systematically and safely."

Naval Propulsion Systems and Electric Capabilities

In addition to engine development, Rolls-Royce aims to address India's requirements for electric and hybrid propulsion systems for naval applications. Mukundan noted that these systems could enhance the Indian Navy's combat capabilities, as they are derived from aero engine cores. He stated, "Rolls-Royce is among the few global players with the capability to 'marinise' aero engines at scale."

He further explained that if the aero-core derivative is co-designed and built in India, it could support both aviation and naval applications, thereby justifying the supply chain.

Strategic Importance of India

Mukundan highlighted India's policy clarity and commitment to building indigenous defence capabilities as key factors that make it a strategic base for Rolls-Royce. He remarked, "The Indian government's focus on building domestic capability across naval, land, and air domains is very visible. Over the long term, India will be a major global power. For Rolls-Royce, that makes India not just an important market, but a long-term strategic home."

The company is also set to finalise two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Indian defence public sector units. One agreement will focus on manufacturing engines for the Arjun main battle tank, while the other aims to develop engines for future combat vehicles. Mukundan stated that these partnerships would further enhance the collaboration between Rolls-Royce and India's defence sector.

Conclusion

As Rolls-Royce forges ahead with its plans in India, the company seeks to build a robust presence that aligns with India's ambitions in defence and advanced engineering. With a strong emphasis on technology transfer and local manufacturing, Rolls-Royce aims to contribute significantly to India's defence ecosystem, solidifying its position as a key player in the global aerospace industry.
