Rift within NCP Exposed as Legal Challenge Arises Against Sunetra Pawar
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is currently experiencing significant internal strife, with a recent organisational challenge raising questions about the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister and National President Sunetra Pawar. This turmoil comes just months after the tragic passing of her predecessor, Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash on 28 January.
Sunetra Pawar, known colloquially as 'Vahini' or 'Tai,' took on a prominent leadership role following the death of Ajit Pawar. She was sworn in as deputy chief minister on 31 January and was then unanimously elected as the NCP national president during a party convention held in Mumbai on 26 February.
A growing discontent among party members has been noted, attributed to a perceived 'communication gap' between the party's leadership and grassroots supporters. Reports have recently identified dissatisfaction among senior party figures, including Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare, although earlier denials of internal discord were made by NCP officials.
The current challenge arose when former NCP national secretary Sachchidanand Singh, representing through the Delhi-based law firm ARS Associates, sent a letter to Sunetra Pawar, Praful Patel, and NCP General Secretary Brijmohan Shrivastav. The letter alleged that the election results from February 26 were unconstitutional and should be deemed 'null, void, and non-est.' Despite the claims, Singh expressed support for Sunetra Pawar's leadership while asserting that the party's rules and regulations had not been adhered to during the election process.
In response to queries regarding the unrest, Sunetra Pawar stated that Sunil Tatkare would address the matter. Praful Patel has publicly insisted that there is no rift within the party, noting that senior leaders regularly convene with Sunetra Pawar to discuss essential political issues. Patel dismissed the significance of Singh's letter, suggesting it lacked weight and emphasising the value of resolving any issues amicably.
Amid these developments, the NCP's core committee is expected to meet soon to address the emerging crisis. Former NCP Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Amol Mitkari, close to Ajit Pawar, voiced concerns regarding the motivations behind Singh's letter, calling for a deeper investigation into the issue. Sunil Tatkare also supported Sunetra Pawar, stating that the entirety of the Maharashtra and national parties is united behind her leadership and reaffirming that the election followed proper procedures as outlined in the party's Constitution.
As the NCP navigates these turbulent internal dynamics, the outcome remains uncertain, with significant implications for its stability and future direction.
