Rescue Efforts Underway in Kumamoto After Severe Earthquake
A major earthquake in Kumamoto, Japan, has led to building collapses and people missing, with rescue teams mobilised to search for survivors.

A significant earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, has resulted in the trapping of individuals within a shopping centre, according to local fire services. Witnesses reported that part of the second floor of the Aeon Mall collapsed. Although reports indicate that 20 to 30 employees may be unaccounted for, this figure remains unconfirmed.

The earthquake, registering a magnitude of 7.1, struck at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT) and has caused widespread disruptions, including power outages, damaged roads, and structural failures, such as a collapsed footbridge and a historical castle wall. Kumamoto Castle, built in the 17th century, had previously suffered damage from a major earthquake in 2016.

Emergency teams are currently involved in rescue operations at the Aeon Mall, where severe damage has been observed. Verified videos from the scene depict significant structural disrepair, with building facades torn apart and debris scattered across the area. Many shoppers, who were evacuated with the assistance of mall staff before the tremors intensified, are seen calmly exiting the building.

Rescue efforts are further complicated by the collapse of a chimney at a paper factory in Yatsushiro City, within the same prefecture. Reports suggest that individuals may be missing following this incident as well, with police and firefighters examining the situation at the Nippon Paper Industries Yatsushiro Plant.

As night falls, emergency workers are actively searching through the collapsed areas of the mall. The Prime Minister of Japan has reported injuries among the populace and has mobilised approximately 3,600 self-defence forces to assist in rescue operations. Officials express particular concern regarding those trapped within the shopping centre.

Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant due to potential aftershocks, with over 60 aftershocks recorded since the initial quake. People are cautioned to stay informed via radio and television regarding safety advisories or evacuation instructions.

In addition to local emergencies, Tokyo Haneda Airport is experiencing disruptions, with numerous domestic and international flight delays and cancellations. Passengers are urged to verify their flight statuses with their respective airlines before undertaking travel.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has a comprehensive seismic intensity scale, which categorises tremors on a scale of zero to seven. The recent tremors recorded after today’s main earthquake have varied in intensity, showcasing the ongoing risk to the region’s infrastructure and population.
